Play was halted with 8:08 left and the Wizards leading 102-98 when Nene and Rockets center Dwight Howard engaged in a brief skirmish. Each player was assessed a technical foul and since Howard had already been issued a technical foul in the second quarter he was ejected. But Nene, to his and the Wizards’ surprise, was also ejected moments later when he was assessed a second technical foul after the referees reviewed the episode. “I don’t know about that,” said Nene, who posted 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench after starting the previous four games. “I don’t understand it. Nobody figured out what happened, even then.”
Referee John Goble explained the officials’ reasoning after the game. “The rulings on Nene and Howard were Nene was initially issued his first technical foul for wrapping Howard in the upper torso area,” Goble said. “Howard was then issued a technical foul for pushing Nene. Nene was then issued a second technical foul for continuing to taunt Howard after that.”
Nene kept tangling with Dwight Howard and it erupted with shoves that sent the officials to replay. Howard had a technical from the second quarter and Dudley was hit for a flagrant one for his exchange with the big man. “Nene gave him a hard foul at one point and time and they started getting into it,” Dudley said of a previous entanglement between the big men that led to the ejections. “With Dwight, reputation comes in a lot. He gets a lot of quick technicals maybe some guys wouldn’t get.”
The Washington Wizards will be a little more complete for their showdown against the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night at Verizon Center as Nene confirmed he will return after missing 19 games with a strained left calf and Gary Neal (quad) is also likely to suit up. Nene, 33, hasn’t played since exiting Washington’s loss to the Boston Celtics on Nov. 27. The backup center is averaging 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 17.4 minutes this seaason. He leads the team with a plus-6.1 net rating in 209 total minutes in 12 games.
