Luka Doncic and Goran Dragic are ready to help their country in the upcoming FIBA window, but the Slovenian basketball federation (KZS) faces unexpected hurdles. At the beginning of May, KZS’ president Matej Erjavec told that the amount of insurance for Luka Doncic’s contract for FIBA World Cup qualifying games is still unknown. However, the situation remains the same to this day.
KZS’ Secretary General and legendary Slovenian basketball player Raso Nesterovic didn’t hide his frustration while talking to STA. “We have one of the biggest stars in the basketball world on the team, who are ready to sacrifice their days off in the middle of summer, but we have not yet received information on where, how, and by when we have to register and insure celebrities such as Luka Doncic and Goran Dragic,” Nesterovic said.
Siol.net also reports that the insurance cost will be even higher due to the new Doncic contract with the Dallas Mavericks, which is worth 207.1 million US dollars. KZS will reportedly need to cover 100 000 dollars for Doncic’s insurance and 15 000 for Dragic’s.
Radoslav Nesterovic has announced his retirement from professional basketball from Lithuania, where he is currently, as an advisor of Slovenia NT, Slovenian website siol.net reports. He made the announcement talking to reporters, where he stated: “I believe my basketball career has ended. It’s enough. I’ve had a 17 years long professional basketball career. My latest injury has nothing to do with this decision. This was a personal decision. Basically I can’t function as I did in the past, anymore. If I can’t be at my 100% as a l player, I would rather do something else at the fullest.”
“I don’t want to become a coach. I don’t want to speak about me in any managerial function in any club. This is hard to admit but these days the clubs are turning to the amateur side of the sport due to financial hardships. The properly functioning clubs are numbered. I would like to work with children, it would make me happy. They get you, you get them and most importantly things are more relaxed with them.”
Rasho Nesterovic is close to leave Olympiacos after one season. The Greek team won’t extend the contract of the big man, although they have an option to do it until 15th of July. If Olympiacos exercises the clause, the team has to pay to Nesterovic €1.3M next season. Nesterovic returned back to Europe after several seasons in NBA but did not impress with his performances. The center also suffered an arm injury which slowed him down in the second part of the season.
