Hawes has stayed in game shape, training in his native city of Seattle. Last season, his first on the outskirts of the NBA since 2007, he grew excited with each passing rumor and every potential roster opening. “I don’t want to go out getting cut,” Hawes says. “I know it’s a rare thing to kind of go out on your terms. But I still have a lot in the tank.”
Spencer Hawes would have preferred to receive the remaining $6 million of his four-year, $23 million contract up front. “It’s nice having an income, but it’s also nice having your money and getting to invest in different areas when opportunities strike,” he says. “Maybe give the owners the opportunity to not have it hit their books all at the same time, but the fact that the players get penalized and have to wait for it, it’s another thing that’s kind of frustrating.”
