Three weeks remain until the Washington Wizards kick off the 2015-16 campaign with training camp and the club has begun completing its roster of attendees by signing point guard Ish Smith and combo guard Toure’ Murry to non-guaranteed contracts with training camp invites, according to a person familiar with the situation. Neither player is expected to make the Wizards’ final roster; Washington is already at the 15-man limit and a move to make room for another player is unlikely. If anything, the Wizards prefer entering seasons with a vacant spot for flexibility.
Washington is also interested in inviting center Jaleel Roberts to training camp. A 7-footer, Roberts went undrafted out of UNC-Asheville in June and played on the Wizards’ summer league team. The Wizards are slated to begin training camp at Towson University on Sept. 29. They will spend three days at Towson before completing camp at Verizon Center.
David Pick: Source: Denver Nuggets, ex-Northeastern shooter Matt Janning sign non-guaranteed camp deal.
Second-round draft pick J.P. Tokoto has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Tokoto, the 58th overall pick out of North Carolina in the 2015 NBA draft, agreed to a non-guaranteed $525,000 tender offer, clearing the way for him to possibly become a restricted free agent in 2016. The Sixers would have to make him a qualifying offer to keep matching rights – or risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent.
Shams Charania: The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed with free agent PG Lazeric Jones on a non-guaranteed deal, source tells Yahoo. Jones out of UCLA in 2012.
Tim Bontemps: Multiple sources confirm the report from @Adrian Wojnarowski about the Nets giving veteran swingman Dahntay Jones a camp deal. For a Nets team that has gotten young quickly, Jones -- a well-respected vet -- is a good presence to have around.
Darren Wolfson: Former #Twolves guard Sean Kilpatrick is moving closer to finding a training camp home. The Pelicans are very much in the mix, I hear.
Matt Ramker: Proud to announce Christian Wood @Chriswood_5 has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia 76ers. #Sixers #ASM #UNLV #FindlayPrep
A: I would not be surprised, with 13 fully guaranteed contracts and with Tyler Johnson's partially guaranteed deal, if the Heat open the season either without a 15th player, or with someone not on a guaranteed deal, perhaps cycling through a variety of players with that roster spot. Ennis could elect to bypass his guarantee in order to remain on more of a game-by-game basis, or the Heat could take an extended look at one of their undrafted free agents in camp, perhaps sending one of those players to the D-League while he remains under guaranteed contract. There could be something to be said about retaining flexibility with that roster spot, as long as the Heat believe they have enough depth at small forward. And I believe that remains a question mark.
Late last week, Markel Brown got another tranche of his guaranteed second year, bringing his total to $200,000. On the first day of training camp, he will get fully guaranteed or $845,059. Next up among the five non-guaranteed deals will be Quincy Miller, who'll get $100,000 on October 28, if he makes the team; and Willie Reed, who becomes fully guaranteed that same day. Donald Sloan has to wait till November 1 to get another $200,000 and Ry Boatright until November 15, when he will get $125,000 if he's still on the team. All salaries become guaranteed on January 10.
Ira Winderman: Heat expected to bring in summer-league center Joshua Smith for a workout/tryout next week. Could fill final camp spot.
