Brian Windhorst on a potential Paul Millsap trade to Toronto: “I was talking to an executive just yesterday about a potential Toronto-Atlanta trade and he was like, ‘If they can get two assets out of it, then Atlanta would have done a good job.’ The two assets are Patrick Patterson and Terrence Ross.”
In the end the Raptors balked at sending Cory Joseph, Norman Powell, Patrick Patterson and their No. 9 pick to Oklahoma City for Ibaka. Ujiri wants to add to his talent base, not create a new weakness (bench strength), which is why he stood still at the trade deadline too.
League sources made it clear the Raptors kicked all the right tires. They inquired about deep shooting New Orleans Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson and the Brooklyn Nets’ Thaddeus Young, but dropped out when the asking price would have included the likes of Luis Scola, James Johnson and Pat Patterson to make salaries match and a first-round pick in addition. In Anderson’s case it was deemed too high a price for a defensively challenged rental – he’s a pending free agent – and in Young’s case there were concerns about how his lack of three-point range would create spacing issues. In both cases there were grave concerns about reducing the Raptors’ depth, a strength all season.
Conflicting stories exist whether the Bulls or Raptors initiated talks centered on a Gibson for Patrick Patterson deal. However, the Bulls did ask for the lesser of the Raptors' two first-round picks in those talks, regardless who initiated them, a source said.
The Bulls may also want quality rotation guys instead of future assets; they've pitched Toronto on a Taj Gibson-Patrick Patterson swap that would give them a stretch power forward with another season left on a tidy contract -- and trim their tax bill.
Even though his numbers are down, the sixth-year forward has appeal across the league. Under contract for the next two seasons at $6 million per, Patterson is a stretch power forward that many teams covet.
One scenario has Young being moved to Toronto for a package that could include Patrick Patterson and point guard Delon Wright. The Nets may want a first round pick and Toronto just happens to own the Knicks 2016 first round pick.
