More on Derrick Rose Injury

Derrick Rose will miss Sunday's game against the Atlanta Hawks because of a sprained left ankle that could keep him out of multiple games for the New York Knicks. The Knicks announced that Rose would be unavailable prior to facing the Hawks. He suffered the injury on Friday night in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.
Rose missed his fourth game in the past 10 days Saturday against the Nuggets because of a tight back. During that span, he played only one quarter of another game — at Phoenix on Tuesday. The Knicks want to make sure when Rose finally returns, it’s for good, meaning they won’t rush him back. Rose hasn’t ruled out playing in Tuesday’s home game against the Pacers but wants to be 100 percent. “I hate missing [games] but I have to be smart about it,’’ Rose said before the Knicks’ 127-114 loss. “I want to play consistent games instead of playing one game, aggravating something and missing two games. I want to play consistent games. I don’t want to come back too soon.’’
Ian Begley: Derrick Rose will not play tonight against the Golden State Warriors, according to the Knicks. Rose suffered back spasms on Tuesday vs. PHO.
Derrick Rose was in a panic at the United Center last week, convinced that his former team had stolen back his "unicorn." For an estimated 10 to 15 minutes following New York's victory over the Bulls, Rose's heavy ball was out of sight — prompting the famously calm point guard to launch on the offensive. "I asked one of the (Bulls) assistant coaches like, 'Man, give me my f---king ball, brah. Like, where is my ball?'"
Armstrong wouldn’t guarantee an injury-free campaign but said Rose’s seriousness toward rehab is never an issue. He also raised the notion Rose’s slithering-to-the-basket, physical game is also a factor in why his return to All-Star level has taken longer than others.
“You can do everything you can and things happen,’’ Armstrong said. “One thing I’ll never question is his preparation for the season. It certainly won’t be for a lack of trying. “His style of playing is different and that hasn’t been discussed. That’s what makes him unique. I can’t recall another guard who plays like that. You might see some running backs who are very physical running backs. That’s going to have an impact on how he comes back compared to a running back who uses speed and quickness.’’
But everything changed once that news came out. Rose's image took its first big hit as his undermanned teammates plugged along without him. The Bulls' front office, which continued to stand behind him publicly, wondered privately whether Rose was making his own decisions or listening instead to the advice of his brother Reggie and his agent, former Bulls guard B.J. Armstrong. For one of the first times in Rose's storybook career, he didn't have the full support of everyone around him. For an affable 24-year-old who was always trying to please everybody, he now realized that wasn't possible. Rose chose to sit out the entire season. His teammates stood behind him at every turn. So did the front office and coaches, even if some didn't agree with the decision. Rose made his choice and never wavered, but his relationship with the team and city he loves so much was never quite the same.
“I think it would have been as devastating as Derrick Rose's ACL injury [in 2012] was to adidas,” one industry marketing source told The Vertical. “Nike has the brand equity to survive injuries to their signature athletes. When injuries happen to star players at competing brands, consumers often assume it's the fault of the sneaker brand the athlete is wearing. Yet, with Nike, consumers never blame the product.”
Mike McGraw: Hoiberg says Rose is getting MRI on left elbow today; status for Sat vs Detroit unknown. #Bulls
In other injury related news, Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is "50-50" to play against the Raptors as he continues to recover from a left groin strain. "Jimmy's good to go, he had a good shootaround," Hoiberg said. "He had a really good day [Sunday]. Derrick didn't participate in anything [Sunday], went through most of shootaround. He's still a little bit tight. We'll go back, get a treatment at the hotel, warm him up tonight and make a gametime decision. We'll say right now [Rose is] 50-50 [to play]."
Vincent Goodwill: Rose, asked if he’ll ease his way back into action: "Hell no, I’m try to go all out."
Vincent Goodwill: Nothing official but it seems like Rose will give it a go vs Miami. Hoiberg said if he plays he'll be on quick spurts to build stamina
Vincent Goodwill: Hoiberg said Rose will be a gametime decision tomorrow in Miami. Hoiberg is “hopeful” he’ll play on this trip
K.C. Johnson: Hoiberg:"Nobody wants to be out there more than Derrick does. He cannot explode off that leg. Working him out, you can see it. He’s limping"
Nick Friedell: Derrick Rose will not play against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night because of ongoing issues with hamstring tendonitis. Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg says that as of now Rose does not need an MRI, but he does not sound confident that Rose would play Saturday against the Portland Trail Blazers. "Still too early to tell," Hoiberg said before Friday's game. "But if he feels like he did today then no. But who knows? Hopefully hell make some improvement overnight and get treatment [Saturday], see how he feels."
Nick Friedell: Derrick Rose reiterated that the season is 'a process.' He knew there would be games where he would sit if nagging injuries persisted. Difference between Rose then vs now is that each game is no longer life& death. He's much more cautious with his body given injury history.
KC Johnson: Rose said he still lacks explosiveness and feels twinge with 1st step. No MRI. Not concerned about long-term issues. Gametime decision.
Sam Smith: Rose: "I don’t feel (an MRI) is necessary; I just needed to sit out. If I can play (Thursday) I’m going to play; I’m going to be all right."
Steve Aschburner: Fred Hoiberg anticipates Derrick Rose (R hamstring) will play. Vs. MIL team lite on PGs: J.Bayless (L ankle), G.Vasquez (R ankle). MCW tho.
As long as nothing happens to Derrick Rose between this afternoon and tip-off tonight against Milwaukee, well, the Bulls point guard will be a go after missing the last three games with right hamstring tendinitis and some soreness in the knee. Then again, nothing is ever a sure thing with Rose when it comes to health. “He participated in shootaround today,’’ Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Tuesday.
Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will undergo an MRI on Monday on a sore right knee. Rose missed his third consecutive game on Sunday because of lingering right hamstring soreness, but it was the revelation of knee soreness that came as a surprise prior to Sunday's game against the Toronto Raptors.
Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in April 2012. He tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in November 2013 and had a meniscectomy on the same knee in February 2015. He didn't sound too concerned about the latest knee setback this time around. "I feel good," Rose said. "I feel all right. I just overworked myself. I gotta figure out the days where I'm going to sit. I have to do a little bit better. But the games I have rolling, just tried to give myself a little bit more than I had. And it backfired on me. Tomorrow the MRI. I know everything's going to be fine. But It's more reassurance."
Rose said he thought he would be able to play on Sunday, but woke up with some "discomfort" so the Bulls medical staff decided to play it safe. He said the hamstring "feels good" and is hopeful he will be back on the floor Tuesday night when the Bulls take on the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Bulls point guard missed his second-consecutive game, dealing with tendinitis in a right hamstring that was still experiencing some soreness. It was just the fourth regular-season game Rose has missed since the opening night tip-off, as he sat out two games on the “Circus Trip’’ back in November, on the shelf with a sprained ankle.
Vincent Goodwill: Derrick Rose: "I would love to play in all three of them but really got to pay attention to my body, listen to my body. Just a sprain. Haven’t sprained his ankle in a long time. kind of a weird feeling at first getting an injury like this. No swelling."
You could see Rose wince seemingly more in annoyance and disappointment than pain. He spoke with reporters after the game. If it were serious, he obviously would not have. But anytime anything happens to Rose, including mosquito bites and bloody noses, he is pummeled with the here-we-go-again refrain. It apparently was a simple sprain that happens in just about every NBA game. But Rose has acknowledged given his injury history he knows everyone will react to any setback. “Just a normal ankle injury; should be all right,” Rose said. “I’m just happy nothing’s torn or broken. I don’t think I’m going to need a walking boot. I’m used to twisting my ankles. When I was younger, that’s the injury I always had. I trust and believe in my teammates. I knew they could finish the game. I felt like if I (stayed) out there I could be hurting the team. Right now I’m able to walk on it. That’s a good thing. It’s just an ankle injury, nothing big and I should be back out there.”
Rose has struggled to find a rhythm early in the season, averaging just 12.6 points -- down almost eight points per game from his career average. "This is my first time hearing about it," Rose said of the possible three-month timeline. "But you kind of have that hope in your mind that it gets well a lot quicker. But for this to be seven or eight [weeks] out and still the same way, I can't do nothing but live with it. Get the most out of every day, keep putting my deposits in and keep working on my game until my eye gets better. "But I'm loving the way that I'm working out, I'm loving the way that we're playing. We're winning games, so that's the only thing that I'm worried about. Everything else will come."
Derrick Rose participated in portions of contact practice Thursday and said he may play limited minutes in Friday’s exhibition finale against the Mavericks in Lincoln, Neb. "It’s reality. Every day I’m improving,” Rose said. “The eye itself, the swelling is going down, so just taking my time. Practice has been going well. Been practicing pretty hard, and if everything is all right (Friday), I’m going to play a little bit."
Rose also didn’t rule out playing in the season opener on Oct. 27 against the Cavaliers. "Opening night is opening night," he said. "It’s when the season starts, so it’s your showcase to show everybody what you been doing the entire summer. So it’s a big night, but at the same time if I feel like I can’t go there’s no point in rushing it or pushing myself."
KC Johnson: Rose took contact in workout with coaches, who hit him with pad as he shot. Still has some double vision and swelling. But Hoiberg upbeat.
Another day, another Derrick Rose update. The Bulls cleared Rose for non-contact activity on Wednesday, although the guard is still experiencing some minor swelling around the fractured left orbital he had surgically repaired on Sept. 30. His vision also continues to create occasional issues, though Rose did go ahead and get fitted for the mask he will wear whenever he returns.
Mike McGraw: Rose probably a week away from running. Hoiberg says. Not sure if he'll be ready for opener. #Bulls
Derrick Rose may be cleared to begin activity within a week, and be able to practice shortly thereafter, Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Monday. The Bulls haven't ruled Rose out for the opening game of the regular season against Cleveland Oct. 27. He had surgery Sept. 30 on a fractured left orbital bone suffered in practice a day earlier. "Derrick, hopefully in another week, will be able to start getting active again, and then hopefully start practicing shortly thereafter," Hoiberg said. Rose was at the United Center for the Bulls' preseason game against the New Orleans Pelicans Monday night, but likely wouldn't be on the bench, Hoiberg said. "He's still getting a little bit of blurred vision, so I feel it's best for him to watch the game in the back," Hoiberg said. "But I know he's excited to be here and be with the guys in the locker room."
“We’ve added probably three sets, three actions, from when Derrick was here that first day [last Tuesday],’’ Hoiberg said. “You know, he was great. He was in great spirits, a great mood. He’s itching to get back here. He’s got a follow-up appointment [this afternoon], and then hopefully he’ll be able to get out of his house a little bit Wednesday. Then he’s got another full week where he’s got total inactivity. “His eye is swollen shut, as far as his appearance, but again he’s moving around, he’s great. He just can’t do anything right now to get his blood pressure up, but it was great to see him. We also sent him the file of everything we’ve got going. After the [preseason] game tonight, we’ll have another session with him before we head out of town.’’
Derrick Rose is expected to rejoin the Bulls on Wednesday as he continues to recover from a fractured left orbital, according to Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. "Follow up [exam] went very well," Hoiberg said after Saturday's practice. "They've advised him to continue to let that sight heal and they think the best way to do that is for him to stay at home at this time. We plan on him being back Wednesday morning."
KC Johnson: Rose has a follow-up exam on Friday. Will stay away from team until at least then because of sensitivity to light.

After parting ways with Monty Williams on May 14, the Suns had a thorough coaching search process that led to five finalists. Vogel, former Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers, now-76ers coach Nick Nurse, Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez and Suns assistant Kevin Young each met with Suns owner Mat Ishbia, president of basketball operations James Jones and other team officials in the final stage of the search over the past couple weeks. For the Suns, Vogel’s connectivity and collaborative approach provided the organization confidence that this could be a long-lasting partnership with staying power.
