The Washington Wizards are in discussions to sign free-agent big man J.J. Hickson for the remainder of the season, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. A deal has not been finalized and won’t be on Tuesday, but it would be for the pro-rated veteran’s minimum. Hickson, 27, was bought out by the Denver Nuggets on Monday after appearing in 20 games this season. The eight-year veteran averaged 6.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per game. He would serve as the Wizards’ third center behind Marcin Gortat and Nene.
The Wizards have a roster spot open after trading big men Kris Humphries and DeJuan Blair plus a first-round pick to the Phoenix Suns for Markieff Morris last Thursday. They are about $1 million under the luxury tax threshold and will remain under if Hickson signs for the pro-rated minimum.
