But his heart and mind are with his national team comrades. This is why shortly following his return from China, the Milwaukee Bucks point-forward paid a visit to “OAKA” arena, home of the Greek squad’s practices, in order to talk with his teammates and the national team’s coaching staff.
Before departing for Milwaukee, where he will begin treatment for his knee, Giannis will also attend Wednesday’s (23/8) prep game between of Greece against Zaza Pachulia’s Georgia for the “Akropolis International Tournament”.
According to the Serbian Federation press release “the chronic issue of Teodosic, due to which he missed part of the training camp and all the preparation games, prevents him from being completely healthy at the start of the tournament. Coach Aleksandar Djordjevic and Milos Teodosic, after consulting with the medical team of our national team and the LA Clippers, jointly made this difficult decision”.
"Giannis recently left his national team to travel to China for an appearance. Here he was visited by Bucks Head of Strength and Conditioning Suki Hobson. Hobson put Giannis through a series of exercises to evaluate his knee and reported that he was still experiencing significant pain on basic movements. "After reviewing the report filed by Hobson, Dr. Raasch recommended that due to the recurring knee pain, Giannis should not continue to attempt to play at this time and that the best course of action would be for him to return to Milwaukee for further evaluation and to begin a structured, daily rehabilitation program.
That assertion led the NBA to put out a statement on Saturday night refuting any notion that Antetokounmpo's injury was staged. "The NBA and the Milwaukee Bucks have followed all appropriate protocol under the NBA-FIBA agreement," said Tim Frank, the NBA's senior vice president of basketball communications. "Giannis has an injury that has been confirmed through multiple examinations and any suggestion to the contrary is false."
The Bucks took things a step further with a statement that was released early Sunday morning. The statement, which came from general manager Jon Horst, detailed the events that led to Antetokounmpo removing himself from EuroBasket competition. The full statement from Horst is as follows: "After a brief time in training with the Greek National Team, Giannis reported to our basketball staff that he was having right anterior knee pain following certain movements. At this time, we contacted the Greek National Team and requested that Giannis stop on-court running and jumping for a period of time to rest. Bucks Team Physician Dr. William Raasch consulted with Dr. Voulgaropoulos of the Greek National Team regarding the injury and as a result Giannis continued to sit out from training.
Greek Basketball Federation: The simultaneous briefing by the manager of the Milwaukee Bucks and by Giannis Antetokounmpo himself via phone and social media from distant China – and not in the proper formal form – for his inability to play for the Greek national team, brought us sadness due to this great loss, but unfortunately it does not surprise us.
Greek Basketball Federation: A series of clues by which we were particularly worried about since Giannis arrived in Greece and the national team training camp started, had created the conviction of an organized and well-staged plan by the NBA franchise in which Giannis has signed. Everything was in full knowledge of the NBA, if not encouraged by the NBA, and the athlete was put in a very difficult place and ultimately was obliged today to inform that he can’t be a member of the national team.
Emiliano Carchia: OFFICIAL: Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss Eurobasket
Giannis Antetokounmpo: I want everyone to be informed by me that I will not be able to play for the Greek national team in the upcoming Eurobasket. All this time I was pressuring myself to practice. I was trying to fool myself and not feel the pain, hoping that I will be ready for the official games. I failed in the tests I was put to and the reason was the pain I felt from the first seconds. I can accept the truth and deal with it in a mature manner. I have to work and improve as much as I can the condition of my knee.
Giannis Antetokounmpo: This is by far the biggest disappointment that I have felt so far in my career. I want to wish the best from the bottom of my heart to my teammates and coaches. The national team is my favorite team and in the future I will prove together with my teammates that we can achieve high goals and make all the Greeks happy.
Gasol, currently with the Spanish national side as they prepare for Eurobasket was understandably shaken, as were all the players of the national team. The San Antonio Spurs forward, who hails from Barcelona sent a message of union. “We send a message of support, commotion and pain for yesterday’s attack, both on Las Ramblas and in Cambrils, we are all very much affected,” Gasol told reporters in Melilla, where the Spanish national team is based.
“Let’s hope that the wounded will recover. We also thank the armed forces that protect the citizens and have helped in this critical moment, and to everyone who has been able to contribute in this critical situation. To unity and cohesion. Together, union is the way to overcome tragedy”, he added.
Pau Gasol talked about the upcoming Eurobasket and he didn’t forget the big absence of the Spanish national team. Speaking about Sergio Llull’s injury he said: “It was an emotional and psychological blow to the team. He is a guy you want to play with and a major contributor to the team. It will be difficult to cover him, but each player has to contribute. I wish we can win the championship and dedicate our success to Sergi, who is an important part of this team”.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was dominant in his first international match of the summer, but he will be disappearing again next week. The Milwaukee Bucks star will be absent from Greece’s Eurobasket schedule due to an upcoming tour of China, which takes place from August 15-20.
David 'Dubi' Pick: Source: Espana star PG Sergio Llull of has been ruled OUT of EuroBasket and Euroleague for Real Madrid with injured ACL.
Rubio also focuses on Sergio Rodriguez, who believes that complements the team perfectly. “We got together very well. He’s a more scoring guard and I’m more of a distributor in the game. We are going with a lot of confidence and we can both end the game at any time.” As for the chances that Spain has in the Eurobasket, he explains that “We go with a lot of confidence. We know a lot but there are very new faces and we have to adapt a little.”

“It was just a mistake, especially since I end up hurting myself, unfortunately. I’m extra sorry for my teammates to whom I apologize,” Gallinari said to Italian news agency ANSA. His estimated recovery time will take 40 days and he’s essentially ruled out of the EuroBasket that begins on August 31.
Gallinari sustained the injury following a punch he threw on Jito Kok of the Dutch team. The two players were involved in a fight during the game which started when Kok held the Clippers forward back way too aggressively to get a better position for a rebound. Gallinari reacted by hitting his opponent and throwing a full swing at him which was the punch that caused the injury.
Gallinari will miss the rest of Eurobasket play for Italy, but the expectation is that he'll be ready for Clippers training camp in September. He's expected to need a month of rest and rehabilitation. The Clippers will follow up soon with their own examination.

“Spain has the quality to fight for the championship”, said the San Antonio Spurs big man and he explained how this can be done. “The goal is to start working and prepare as we do every year. The tournament takes you where you deserve. We have enough quality to qualify for the final phase and fight for the championship title. We have great ambition”.
New Indiana Pacers recruit Domantas Sabonis has been withdrawn from the Lithuanian national side this summer.
The reasoning behind the 21-year-old’s sudden absence is due to the Pacers declining that he be taken away from club duties in the off-season. The Pacers’ trainers will work with Sabonis to prepare him for the new season ahead.
Furkan Korkmaz will play for Turkey in the U-20 European Championship, after all. The 76ers rookie will board an 11-hour flight to Germany on Saturday. From there, he’ll take a four-hour flight to Greece to join his Turkish teammates. The tournament, which will begin Saturday, runs through July 23. After that, Korkmaz will play for the Turkish senior team in Eurobasket 2017 from Aug. 31 to Sept. 17, if he’s selected.
While the Sixers always supported his playing in Eurobasket, the team originally didn’t give its content for his participation in the U-20 tourney once he signed his NBA contract on July 4.
"I can confirm my presence on the list and my intention to continue to win more medals and achieve success with our national team," Spain's greatest-ever player said this week at the launch of his academy. "Each tournament can be the last and that is why you have to give your all and compete as though that were the case. We shall see if in two years' time (at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019) I play or what we do."
Jokic’s decision mainly has to do with the player’s preference to dedicate his offseason to individual workouts in order to improve himself ahead of the new season.
The Spanish federation announced the pre-selection of the team which includes Pau and Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez, Sergio Llull, Alex Abrines, Fernando San Emeterio, Juancho and Willy Hernangomez, Nikola Mirotic and Juan Carlos Navarro who are expected to be part of the final team and will start training at the 28th of July.

Marc Stein: EuroBasket 2017 team to watch: Slovenia with @Goran Dragic, top 2018 draftee @Luka Doncic & sharp Jazz assistant Igor Kokoskov as head coach
All signs according to a Wolves source are that Nemanja Bjelica will not play for Serbia in the Eurobasket.
Juan Carlos Navarro wants to play at least one more season, as he said in an interview with El Mundo Deportivo. “I will talk with Barcelona when the season ends. I want to play next season. This year I felt good except the two months I have been injured. I think I can help the team, not like in the past, but in some moments of the game. I see the respect of the opposing teams, how players guard me or try to contrast my shots” Navarro added. “Eurobasket? If I am healthy, I would love to play for Spain. That would be my last summer”.
KL Chouinard: Ersan Ilyasova said that he was unsure about playing for national team of Turkey, especially with his pending free agency.
Damjan Rudez is eager to return to the Croatia squad and help the national team build on the positive momentum that started last summer during its successful FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) campaign in Turin.
New York Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis "absolutely" wants to help Latvia in their FIBA EuroBasket 2017 campaign. In an interview with FIBA.com, Porzingis, who last played for his country at the FIBA U18 European Championship 2013, has yet to confirm that he will be with the national side when it competes in Istanbul.
When asked if it was possible for him to play this summer for the national team and if he'd like to compete at the FIBA EuroBasket, Porzingis answered: "Yes, absolutely. I would like to help the team get to the second round and have a great campaign."
Danilo Gallinari told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he will play at Eurobasket for the Italian National Team. “I will play. There is no reason for me to miss the media day scheduled for July 20 in Milan. Only injuries stopped me from playing with the Italian National Team which is above everything” Gallinari said.
Sacramento Kings center Kostas Koufos is undecided on whether he will represent Greece at this summer’s Eurobasket. Speaking to Greek outlet Cosmote, Koufos admitted that he had not thought about his summer plans with the national side.
Willy Hernangomez has a rich summer ahead — a chance to work with his “idol,” Grizzlies star center Marc Gasol, every day for more than a month. Gasol has committed to playing for the Spanish National team in the European Championships. Hernangomez, the Knicks’ stud rookie center, wants to play but hasn’t yet gotten permission from team brass.
“For sure I want to play with the national team,’’ Hernangomez told The Post. “This summer is a big opportunity to play with Spain. It’s a long summer and I won’t want to be burned. But Marc will come. It’s going to be great to play with him. I’m sure it’s going to be nice practicing with him every day. I try to learn every day from someone like him now. For sure I’ll earn something form him tonight.’’
Mario Hezonja said Friday he intends to spend almost his entire offseason in Orlando in order to prepare for the 2017-18 NBA season. “I need extra work,” Hezonja said. “I need [to do] everything possible to make my game better.”

Nicolas Batum: “I have not missed a competition with France since 2004, counting the junior National Teams. The decision is taken. I will officially announce it at the end of the NBA Season. I am going to be treated like a mercenary or a coward. But I’ve 127 selections with National Team. I played twice against Blazers’ opinion and I played a Eurobasket with a shoulder injury” Batum said.
While Euro rookies Willy Hernangomez (Spain) and Mindaugas Kuzminskas (Lithuania) say they expect to play in the European Championships in late August/September, Kristaps Porzingis has made no decisions for Latvia. Porzingis told The Post he still is debating and wants to talk to the Knicks about it. Last summer, Porzingis decided against playing for Latvia in its Olympic qualifier. Hernangomez and Kuzminskas played for their respective countries in the Olympics in Rio last summer.
You have represented Croatia twice at the senior level. Are you planning to join Croatia squad for EuroBasket 2017? Mario Hezonja: I don’t think so. I’ll have a long summer with Orlando: workouts and everything. I’m not going to discuss about that right now but I don’t believe that will happen.
"Pau has also told me he's coming," Scariolo said. "All of them want to see how they finish the season. For them to say that they’re looking forward to coming and asking what we're going to do is a first good step, but then we have to wait and see how they end the season - the physical status of those that have to take part in the play-offs. We have to wait until then to have a definite idea but the pre-disposition of all of the players is very good."
Marc Gasol, Pau's younger brother, is set to play after a two-year absence. Marc Gasol chose to sit out FIBA EuroBasket 2015 while an injury prevented him from playing last summer in Brazil. "We’ll begin training on 28 July and we’ll have to change our way of playing with respect to the last two years when Marc hasn’t been here," Scariolo said. "We’ll have to incorporate him. It’s an important readjustment and there are many things that we’re working on."
"(Nikola) Mirotic and (Serge) Ibaka have confirmed their availability," Scariolo said to Onda Cero radio. "Obviously there is a different status and situation, but all of the players have confirmed to me their availability, although with certain provisos. Each has his own circumstances and own situation, but the availability of all is very good."
Scariolo will only be allowed to call up Mirotic or Ibaka, but not both, since each can only compete for the country as a naturalized Spaniard. Ibaka played at FIBA EuroBasket 2011, the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup while Mirotic represented the country at FIBA EuroBasket 2015 and at last year's Olympics.
Do you intend to play at FIBA EuroBasket 2017 this summer? Joffrey Lauvergne: Yes, that is a goal for me. I want to play for the national team. Things have been going well for me with the national team and I enjoy spending my summer with the guys from the team and staff.
Motiejunas also revealed that he aims to join the Lithuanian national team in the upcoming Eurobasket. “I have much desire to play for the national team. Last year due to certain circumstances I was out but I hope that things will work out this year and I’ll be able to play with the national team.”
Last summer Boban Marjanovic was left out of the Serbian national team squad that won silver medal in Rio. But as he told Eurohoops, he plans to make a comeback in the upcoming Eurobasket tournament. “I hope so. I hope to be there. It depends… it Sasa Djordjevic. If he calls me or not. If he calls me, I’ll be there. I’m available.”
FIBA EuroBasket 2017 action will tip-off when Slovenia take on Poland at 13:45 local time (12:45 CET) on August 31 in Group A action in Helsinki Arena, Finland. Group B in Tel Aviv Arena, Israel, will also begin on August 31, whilst Group C, in Polyvalent Hall, Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Group D in Fenerbahce Arena, Istanbul, Turkey, will begin one day later.
Pau Gasol confirmed once again that he wants to play with the Spanish national team in the upcoming Eurobasket 2017. “My desire of playing for the national team is very big and I’ve been proving it for many years, but now I’m trying to be more cerebral at the moment I’m in my career, no more and no less, “said Gasol speaking to ‘El Larguero’ show of Cadena SER.
However, there’s no final decision on the matter “so far” and everything still depends on his NBA season. “The load of games can take a toll on you and taking breaks are more important for me. I hope that with San Antonio we get as far as possible and if that is the case we will finish our season in the middle or at the end of June, so the decision will not be easy”, he added.
The 27-year-old, who is in London with the Pacers as they face the Denver Nuggets at the O2 Arena on Thursday night is understandably focussing on his club duties but has said that he will make contact with the federation during the season. “I haven’t spoken to the French federation yet but it’s something I am going to do at some point,” Seraphin said. “Being honest, it’s a step-by-step thing but I am hopeful to play for France this summer. However, my focus is with the Pacers and I am waiting to see where I stand in regards to the rotation and where I stand here and see where I might be with the national side moving forward.”
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio says it's far "too early" to know if he'll be in a Spain team that will be taking aim at a fourth European title in five years next summer. The desire to be on that roster is already there, though. "Of course, if I'm healthy," he said to FIBA.com. "But sometimes I speak too early and then I get hurt, so I just want to focus right now on this situation with the (Minnesota) team."
Spain's opponents in the Group Phase at FIBA EuroBasket 2017 will be Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro and Romania in Group C. "The European Championship is always hard," Rubio said. "There are a lot of good teams and it's not an easy tournament. Sometimes it's harder than a World Cup. "You just have to play tough. We know the last European Championship, we weren't favorites but we won. We're trying to bring the best team so we can win again."
Eurobasket champions Spain have a favourable draw as they travel to Romania to open their 2017 campaign in Cluj-Napoca. The 2015 winners will face Croatia, Czech Republic, Montenegro, Hungary and hosts Romania in Group C. Eurobasket runners-up Lithuania will be housed in Tel Aviv, where they are drawn with the hosts Israel, Ukraine, Georgia, Italy and Germany. Group D, which takes place at the Ulker Sports Arena on the Asian side of Istanbul looks to be the toughest pool of the four as Turkey hosts Great Britain, Russia, Serbia, Latvia and Belgium.

There is a growing belief among rival teams that Durant knew when he issued that me-or-them ultimatum that Tsai had no intention of yielding to the request and firing Marks and Nash. One resultant theory that the Durant/Tsai meeting spawned is the idea KD has begun trying to manufacture as much behind-the-scenes discord as he can in hopes that it will lead the Nets to lower their asking price and trade him out of exasperation.
Appearing on The Scoop podcast with Darren Wolfson of SKOR North and 5 Eyewitness News, Glen Taylor said new Wolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly had his eye on multiple impact trade targets, but Gobert was his “number one option.” The input of head coach Chris Finch, who expressed confidence in his ability to use Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns, was also a key factor in Minnesota’s decision to pull the trigger on the blockbuster deal. “What I did when Tim and Chris talked to me about this trade is to ask (Finch) is there a system that he knows how to utilize these players,” Taylor said. “And he was very confident that he did understand how to utilize their skill sets, being two big guys. We talked about a lot, so he convinced me that this is something that is going to take us to a winning situation, and gave us the go-ahead to make the trade.”
Asked if he’d like to see D’Angelo Russell sign an extension before the season begins, Taylor said it might benefit both sides to hold off and see how the 2022/23 season goes. “(Finch) believes that with the new lineup, and with Russell in that lineup, that he’ll have a much better year just because of the way we’re going to play,” Taylor said. “He says he thinks there’s a big upside for Russell with this group of (players). That’s to his advantage and to our advantage if it works out.”
The plan remains for Taylor to hand over control of the franchise to incoming owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez in a little over a year. The Wolves’ longtime owner said he’s not having any regrets about giving up control of the team as it becomes a more legitimate contender. “No, I don’t have any second thoughts. I think it’s the right thing to do,” Taylor said. “We’ve left some options open that I’ll continue to be involved if I want to be involved, and that suits me just fine.”
“My favorite NBA player to watch besides Steph is Luka,” Green said on the latest edition of his eponymous podcast. “Luka different. I mean, the way he sees the floor, scores the basketball, gets to his spot, his pace. It’s Luka for sure.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be gathering in Los Angeles for voluntary, player-led pre-training camp workouts next week, sources tell cleveland.com. All-Star point guard Darius Garland and Rookie of the Year runner-up Evan Mobley — two guys who spend time on the West Coast during the offseason — are helping organize the workouts.
