The Timberwolves are signing guard Derrick Rose for the rest of the season, a source confirmed to the Star Tribune. ESPN first reported the news Thursday. Rose, 29, figures to give the Wolves scoring off the bench as they try to make a push for their first playoff berth since 2004. Minnesota has been shorthanded since guard Jimmy Butler was injured last month.

Derrick Rose could return to the court for the Cavaliers during this five-game road trip, and coach Tyronn Lue spelled out Friday how he would fit into the rotation. Rose, who hasn't played since Nov. 7 because of a sprained left ankle and bone spurs, will take minutes and even games away from Dwyane Wade in an effort to preserve Wade for the postseason.
Lue said Wade is on board with his plan for Rose to take some of his time. "I talked to him already," Lue said. "(Wade is) 50-years old, so, sometimes you just don't have it. But with all the guys being out, just don't have the luxury right now. So we talked about it. He understands and he's for it."
Rose said he is pain free in his left ankle, which he first sprained Oct. 20 in the second game of the season. "I haven't had any pain, I haven't had any setbacks," Rose said. "If anything I've been progressing every day and every week, so I'm on the right track."
Derrick Rose rejoined the Cavaliers on Dec. 4 with no timetable for a return from his left ankle injury, but he wants his fans to know that he is “not depressed,” is improving physically and still loves basketball. “Be patient. I’m good. I’m just taking my time,” Rose said. “You don’t have to worry about me. I’m not depressed. I’m good. A lot of people think I’m depressed because of what I’m going through. It’s the total opposite. I learned from my mistakes three or four years ago when I put myself into a shell. And now that I am in this position, it’s only right that I learn from the best. I’m staying with my team, staying with my family, communicating and just being open.”
Anything you can share that LeBron James offered to you supportwise? Derrick Rose: No. No. He didn’t have to say anything. It’s all about me coming in and them knowing I want to be a part of the team too. I think they know I want to play in games too. I want to be in the heat of the moment too. It’s all about taking my time and just being smart about it. Did you come close to retiring? Derrick Rose: No. No. That’s stupid. I don’t want to even talk about that. But I’m just happy that LeBron understood.
Do you have any idea about when you’ll return to action? Derrick Rose: No. It’s really no rush. It’s really about rehabbing my ankle. I’m happy that the rehab is taking care of my problem. Every day or every week I am pressing to something different. It’s good. Do you see a light at the end of the tunnel? Derrick Rose: I think so. Like I said, it’s all about me taking my time. I can’t think about a due date or is this going to be the day. It’s about me making the most of my days, getting treatment and staying atop everything so I can return as soon as possible.

A team official, speaking to a pool reporter on background, said the Cavs discovered the spur when images were taken of Rose's left ankle after he sprained it in game two this season against the Milwaukee Bucks.
The same team official speaking on background said if Rose needs surgery, it would be after the season. While the Cavs have not given a timetable for Rose to resume playing, the issues caused by the spur are related to pain tolerance, the team official said.

Rose declined to answer how close he was to retirement during his nearly two-week absence from the Cavs, nor would he disclose his whereabouts during that time. He was adamant, however, that the reported $80 million remaining on his Adidas contract, which he was in jeopardy of losing should he have decided to walk away from the NBA for good, was not his motivating factor in his return. "Man, I don't care about -- not to be rude -- I don't care about no f---ing money," Rose said. "It's not about that. I've saved up enough money. It's not about that. If I wanted to leave, I would have left. Like I said, coming back here, starting with rehab, that's my first step. Keeping it simple and just giving my team support and then I'll see what I see off the court."
Cavaliers guard Derrick Rose apologized to his teammates at shootaround on Wednesday for his recent absence and referenced frustration with his left ankle injury as the cause for his nearly two-week exile, a team source told ESPN.
Rose's comments were brief and delivered to the team on the court before the Cavs readied themselves to face the Sacramento Kings, the source said. Several of Rose's teammates, LeBron James included, already had said publicly that Rose did not owe them an apology for the time he missed. However, the three-time All-Star took it upon himself to clear the air.
Rose, who has missed 17 of the Cavs' 27 games this season -- including the past 13 straight -- because of a sprained ankle that he suffered on October 20, has no timetable for when he will return to the court, according to Lue. "Just going through his rehab now, trying to get healthy," Lue said. "It won't be in the next few games or nothing like that, so just got to see how he takes to treatment."
There's currently no timetable for his comeback. The nagging ankle injury first occurred on Oct. 20 and it's been plaguing him since. Before he left the team on Nov. 22, Rose was in a walking boot, hoping that would help the recovery. While he's been sidelined, the Cavaliers have surged, winning 12 straight games after blowing out his old team Monday night.
Derrick Rose is interested in returning to the Cavaliers and the team would have him back, but there was no determination as of Sunday afternoon as to when Rose would be back at work. A league source told cleveland.com that the timing of Rose's formal return to Cleveland Clinic Courts -- the Cavs' headquarters -- was still being determined. The team probably won't have any more to say until Rose shows up and Rose's agent, B.J. Armstrong, hasn't returned a call or text to cleveland.com since his client disappeared from the Cavs on Nov. 22.
LeBron James says the Cavs players aren't pushing Derrick Rose for an answer regarding his future. They want him to do what's best for he and his family. But LeBron acknowledged that he hasn't spoken to Rose since before he decided to get away from the team and clear his mind.

Rose missed his second consecutive game and sixth this season Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center and said before shootaround there is no timetable for his return. Iman Shumpert again started in his place. “I haven’t heard anything right now, just day by day, try and get the swelling down, try and get mobility back in my ankle,” Rose said. “Took some steps back with I think just playing on it,” Rose said. “Just trying to play through it, not trying to lose my conditioning and the swelling came back into it. Just gotta wait for the ligament to calm down.”

"Right now I’ve been getting treatment every day, every morning, and night when we land, on the plane. Just trying to get as much treatment as I can or just trying to be smart about it."

Derrick Rose left the Cleveland Cavaliers' 116-97 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday with a sprained left ankle stemming from a hit by Bucks center Greg Monroe that the former MVP said should have been called a flagrant foul. "I think I'm the only person in the league that's not getting a flagrant for that call, bro," Rose said after scoring 12 points in 23 minutes before exiting the game for good with 10:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. "Come on, man. Like, I'm sure I'm the only player, but it is what it is. ... That's a common foul. Wow. Come on."
Rose’s free-agent market value has been damaged by the torn medial meniscus in his left knee. Rose, 28, has had two surgeries on each of his knees and his future as a Knick is murky. Dr. Armin Tehrany, orthopedist surgeon and knee specialist for Manhattan Orthopedic Care, told The Post the latest injury is wear and tear (degenerative cartilage) — not one specific play. In a phone interview, Dr. Tehrany described Rose as being at definite risk for another knee injury because of his “playing style” and genetics. But he believes Rose can return to his former explosiveness.

Derrick Rose saw an eye specialist after Sunday’s game after taking an inadvertent elbow in his left eye from Kristaps Porzingis in the first quarter. It’s the same eye that required surgery to repair a left orbital fracture during training camp in 2015 when Bulls teammate Taj Gibson elbowed him in practice.
Rose said he had trouble seeing during Sunday’s game, but he still was able to score 28 points in the loss to the Warriors. The doctors checked his vision as a precaution and Rose said they told him everything was OK. He said he iced it during the game and throughout the night and Monday to keep the swelling down.

Derrick Rose will miss Sunday's game against the Atlanta Hawks because of a sprained left ankle that could keep him out of multiple games for the New York Knicks. The Knicks announced that Rose would be unavailable prior to facing the Hawks. He suffered the injury on Friday night in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Derrick Rose was in a panic at the United Center last week, convinced that his former team had stolen back his "unicorn." For an estimated 10 to 15 minutes following New York's victory over the Bulls, Rose's heavy ball was out of sight — prompting the famously calm point guard to launch on the offensive. "I asked one of the (Bulls) assistant coaches like, 'Man, give me my f---king ball, brah. Like, where is my ball?'"
Armstrong wouldn’t guarantee an injury-free campaign but said Rose’s seriousness toward rehab is never an issue. He also raised the notion Rose’s slithering-to-the-basket, physical game is also a factor in why his return to All-Star level has taken longer than others.
“You can do everything you can and things happen,’’ Armstrong said. “One thing I’ll never question is his preparation for the season. It certainly won’t be for a lack of trying. “His style of playing is different and that hasn’t been discussed. That’s what makes him unique. I can’t recall another guard who plays like that. You might see some running backs who are very physical running backs. That’s going to have an impact on how he comes back compared to a running back who uses speed and quickness.’’
But everything changed once that news came out. Rose's image took its first big hit as his undermanned teammates plugged along without him. The Bulls' front office, which continued to stand behind him publicly, wondered privately whether Rose was making his own decisions or listening instead to the advice of his brother Reggie and his agent, former Bulls guard B.J. Armstrong. For one of the first times in Rose's storybook career, he didn't have the full support of everyone around him. For an affable 24-year-old who was always trying to please everybody, he now realized that wasn't possible. Rose chose to sit out the entire season. His teammates stood behind him at every turn. So did the front office and coaches, even if some didn't agree with the decision. Rose made his choice and never wavered, but his relationship with the team and city he loves so much was never quite the same.
“I think it would have been as devastating as Derrick Rose's ACL injury [in 2012] was to adidas,” one industry marketing source told The Vertical. “Nike has the brand equity to survive injuries to their signature athletes. When injuries happen to star players at competing brands, consumers often assume it's the fault of the sneaker brand the athlete is wearing. Yet, with Nike, consumers never blame the product.”

In other injury related news, Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is "50-50" to play against the Raptors as he continues to recover from a left groin strain. "Jimmy's good to go, he had a good shootaround," Hoiberg said. "He had a really good day [Sunday]. Derrick didn't participate in anything [Sunday], went through most of shootaround. He's still a little bit tight. We'll go back, get a treatment at the hotel, warm him up tonight and make a gametime decision. We'll say right now [Rose is] 50-50 [to play]."
