Larranaga, 43, is a rising young coach, who has been with the Celtics for six seasons, the last four as Brad Stevens’ top assistant. Larranaga was considered for the Celtics’ job before they hired Stevens, one of the best coaches in the league. He has interviewed for head coaching jobs in Philadelphia and Memphis previously. The Celtics have reached the postseason for four straight seasons, and had the NBA’s top-rated defense. One of Larranaga’s strengths is a Knicks’ focus now: player development. He spent two seasons coaching the Erie BayHawks, which was the Knicks’ Developmental League affiliate before they purchased their own team in 2014.

Jared Weiss: Stevens on LeBron: “The thing that people don’t talk about is how good he’s shot over the years and that’s taken out going under, which probably 3-4 years ago was probably a primary option with most teams.” Almost every time Cs try to go under, he’s popped a pull up three.
Jared Weiss: Stevens jokingly asked if LeBron reading at shootaround psychs him out: “I will say this. I talked about his shooting & the improvement of his shooting has really taken going under pick-and-rolls out as an option over time. He’s as smart of a basketball player as I’ve ever seen.”
Jared Weiss: This interview was pretty phenomenal. Stevens on if he feels pressure to win tonight: “It’s a blast. I’m coaching basketball. Are you kidding me? I realize what a joke it is that I get to do this for a living. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
New York City native and Oklahoma City assistant Royal Ivey interviewed with the Knicks recently for an assistant position on David Fizdale’s staff, per sources. Ivey has also received some interest from other teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, per sources. Ivey played high school basketball at Cardozo HS under legendary high coach Ron Naclerio. The Atheltic earlier reported that the Knicks were considering Ivey as a staff addition.
