“John Havlicek is one of the most accomplished players in Boston Celtics history, and the face of many of the franchise’s signature moments,’’ the Celtics said in a statement. “John was kind and considerate, humble and gracious. He was a champion in every sense, and as we join his family, friends, and fans in mourning his loss, we are thankful for all the joy and inspiration he brought to us.’’
Mark Murphy: Bob Cousy and Tom Heinsohn confirm that John Havlicek has passed after a long bout with Parkinson’s Disease. Heinsohn: “A great athlete. The sad part is what he endured the last couple of years.”
Chris Forsberg: Tommy Heinsohn on John Havlicek: “He’s still the all-time leading scorer, isn’t he, with the Celtics? And justifiably so. He gets lost in the brouhaha over the [eras around him]… He became a total star.”
Orlando Magic president of operations Jeff Weltman said Thursday the franchise wants to bring back leading scorer and rebounder Nikola Vucevic, who is set to hit free agency. Weltman added a caveat: the All-Star center will have numerous suitors.
“Bringing Vooch back is a priority,” Weltman said. “That being said, Vooch is going to have a lot of teams who will make him a priority for them, too. We will meet with his representatives at the appropriate time. Hopefully we can get something done. It’s the NBA, and I always say there’s a lot of real estate between the intentions and what gets done.”
Vucevic, who became a first-time father in December, said he’ll take a wait-and-see approach. “Obviously I’ve had a great seven years here, but at the same time, we’ll see what happens,” Vucevic said. “It’s a mutual decision, and it’s not just me. They have to decide what they want to do. Based on that, we’ll go from there. I wish I knew what would happen. I wish I had a contract in hand. It would be all over right now.”
