Charges of third-degree harassing communications against Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins have been dropped and a misdemeanor case has been dismissed, his attorney Moshae Donald told ESPN on Friday.
A warrant for Cousins' arrest was filed in a Mobile, Alabama county court in August following allegations by Christy West, the mother of their 7-year-old child. West had alleged that Cousins threatened to shoot her during an argument regarding their son.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Third-degree harassment charges against Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins have been dropped, his attorney Moshae Donald tells ESPN. The case, filed in a Mobile, Alabama court, has been dismissed.
Bobby Marks: Despite the third-degree harassment charges dropped, DeMarcus Cousins could still be fined/suspended as a result of the Domestic Violence policy. The NBA can still proceed with the investigation without it being a criminal matter right now.
The NBA contacted Mobile police detectives to discuss a misdemeanor charge facing Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins. There has been a misdemeanor arrest warrant out for Cousins since late August regarding an alleged domestic violence.
“I can confirm that the NBA called our detectives and was told to contact our Legal Department to discuss further,” Mobile police spokeswoman Charlette Solis told AL.com. The NBA did not contact the police department to discuss terms of Cousins’ possible surrender, a spokesman said. “It is categorically untrue that the NBA reached out to the Mobile Police Department to facilitate DeMarcus Cousins’ surrender," spokesman Mike Bass said.
NBA officials are working with the Mobile Police Dept. to coordinate a surrender date for DeMarcus Cousins in his domestic violence case, cops tell TMZ Sports. As we previously reported, Cousins is facing a 3rd-degree domestic violence charge in Alabama stemming from a threatening phone call he allegedly made on August 23 to the mother of his child.
Our NBA sources are adamant no one at the league office reached out to the Mobile Police Department. A Mobile PD spokesperson told us the NBA previously reached out regarding DeMarcus Cousins turning himself in to police.
DeMarcus Cousins is facing a major obstacle in his domestic violence case -- he just underwent knee surgery and is unable to fly to Alabama to turn himself into police, TMZ Sports has learned. As we previously reported, the Mobile Police Dept. confirmed a warrant was issued for the NBA star's arrest stemming from a threatening phone call Cousins allegedly made to the mother of his child.
We're told Cousins wants to cooperate with law enforcement but the issue is that he just underwent surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee on Wednesday and he's not cleared to fly yet. It's unclear where the procedure took place, but we're told it was definitely NOT in Alabama. Most doctors recommend not flying for days (and sometimes weeks) after an ACL surgery because of the risks of clotting. Cousins is facing a 3rd-degree misdemeanor for harassing communications which carries a sentence of up to 1 year behind bars.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. Cousins' ex-girlfriend and the mother of his 7-year-old son filed a police report Friday, about two hours after she alleged Cousins threatened to "put a bullet in your (expletive) head.” The phone conversation was recorded by Cousins’ ex-girlfriend and a copy was provided to the Mobile (Alabama) police department. Footage was released by TMZ on Tuesday.
Mobile police spokesperson Charlette M. Solis told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday that "an arrest warrant has been issued.” The third-degree harassing communications charge was listed on the Mobile municipal court website, although no other information was provided. “Yes, a warrant has been signed,” Cousins' ex-girlfriend told USA TODAY Sports in a text message Thursday. USA TODAY Sports does not identify alleged victims of domestic abuse.
Defense attorney Mary Kristen Galanos, who is not involved in the case, said that a suspect is subject to arrest in Alabama after an alleged victim signs a warrant in a misdemeanor case. “They aren't going (to) send a SWAT team out for him,” said Galanos of Shane A. Taylor & Associates. “What usually happens is that the person is picked up on a routine traffic stop.”
Galanos said since the investigation has garnered so much interest, Cousins’ attorney would likely set up time for Cousins to turn himself in to police, when he’d be processed and released. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor, meaning Cousins would face a maximum of a year in jail.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in Mobile, Alabama.
The Mobile municipal court website lists a third-degree harassing communications charge against Cousins, but no other details have been disclosed. A police spokesperson told USA Today Sports that "an arrest warrant has been issued."

Marc Stein: The first draft of next season’s NBA schedule has Lakers at Dallas/LeBron James at Luka Doncic on Christmas Day, league sources tell me. Changes are still possible before the full schedule officially drops next week but Christmas games usually hold. More NBA from me: marcstein.Substack.com
Although all of the rules and dates are in place, it’s an extremely open secret that there are no rules that truly govern free agency or trades. “There’s not a team in this league that follows the tampering rules to a T,” one front-office executive said. “But there are 30 teams in this league that find ways around the rules every day.”
One person from the league office, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said if a better solution was presented the league would jump at it, but there’s no hope that any such solution exists. “The threat of harsher penalties and random audits doesn’t even make teams flinch,” the source said. “And at this point, if we investigated every possible instance of tampering, the whole league would come to a screeching halt and nothing would ever get done.”
Grant Williams said he has been in contact with Brown since the rumors began gaining steam this summer. “It’s a significant rumor,” said Williams who added, “It’s something you want to take for a grain of salt. I feel like JB is mature in his mindset; he knows that. I’ve talked to him, texted him…it’s one of those things, this league is a business. It’s one of those things you can’t be discouraged by.”
