Irving did on-court work during practice Friday, but is still not cleared for contact. “No timetable on when that’s going to happen,” Atkinson said. “I will say the on-court, non-contact stuff has been ramped up.”

“I think the timeline for his recovery is somewhat up to him, but also up to his body and how that progresses. It could happen quickly or it could take some time,” Nets general manager Sean Marks told Yahoo Sports before Wednesday’s 113-108 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in which Brooklyn blew a 20-point lead. “And where we are at this stage of the season — and where we are as a team over the next couple years — there’s no point in forcing guys to come back too soon. Especially a player of his caliber and expectations.”
“I think everybody’s entitled to their opinion,” Marks told Yahoo Sports. “All I’m going to say is I’m never going to judge a guy on another team until I get to know that person. And I think it’s pretty clear that Kyrie’s not missing a game in Boston and going to sit out two weeks just to avoid one game. He’s legitimately hurt. “I think we’ve seen how competitive Kyrie is when he was healthy at the beginning of the season. And I give him credit for wanting to be back out there at 100 percent. So let’s judge this book when we get through a few chapters here — not the first 5-10 games of the season.”
Brian Lewis: Atkinson on Kyrie: "The plan is to continue to ramp up his individual oncourt work & from there it’s starting to integrate him in the next week or 2 into team practices. Like I always say that could be a planned practice or us making one up if the game schedule so dictates” #Nets
The Nets have been about as transparent as a brick wall when it comes to Kyrie Irving’s shoulder injury. But the star’s absence is approaching three weeks, and multiple sources told The Post he could need a few more — if he’s lucky.
Two specialists told The Post that Irving is likely to be out a few more weeks. One medical source not affiliated with the team intimated there’s more under the surface and that this injury could be even more long term. “That’s a very, very broad term,” said Dr. Andrew S. Rokito, chief of shoulder surgery at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. “Impingement typically does not refer to an acute injury. [It] refers to more of a long-standing, chronic issue with the rotator cuff.
Malika Andrews: Kyrie Irving (shoulder impingement) still isn’t doing any contact work on the court, Kenny Atkinson says. Irving has started to do some on-court exercises.
Stefan Bondy: Kyrie Irving will be at the Garden tonight. He won’t travel to Cleveland and Kenny Atkinson wouldn’t commit to whether he’ll travel to Boston.
Kyrie Irving will not play in the Brooklyn Nets' first matchup against his former team, the Boston Celtics, the team announced Friday night. Irving will miss the Nets' next three games, which include road matchups against the Knicks, the Cleveland Cavaliers and, finally, the Celtics on Wednesday. Irving has already missed Brooklyn's past four games with a right shoulder impingement, which he suffered against the Utah Jazz on Nov. 12. Coach Kenny Atkinson said Irving "gutted out" the Nets' game against the Nuggets two days later but was in pain.
Michael Scotto: Kenny Atkinson on Kyrie Irving's injury: I don’t think it’s a long-term thing. I wouldn’t say we’re being overcautious... Do I think it’s a long-term thing? No. I don’t think he can play through it right now quite honestly. That’s where we are. We’ll see where that goes.
Last week, Irving missed a go-ahead 3-pointer with seven seconds left against Utah Jazz. Irving finished the night 10 of 30 and two nights later he went 8 for 20 in a loss to the Denver Nuggets. Irving’s bad aim — 18 for 50 over two games — could very well be the result of the shoulder injury. “I know he wasn’t 100 percent going into the Denver game (Thursday),” Atkinson said. “We all knew that. But he played through it, and the returns obviously (Saturday) morning weren’t great. So I think it’s a smart thing, it’s a prudent thing to do. And we’ll see going forward what it looks like.”
ShowtimeForum: Kyrie Irving has been ruled out for the game after getting hit in the face. He was already wearing a mask after suffering a facial fracture.
Greg Logan: #KyrieIrving did not practice with #Nets for the second straight day of training camp because of his facial injury. Coach Kenny Atkinson said he normally doesn't play "matchup game" with his lineups but expects to do it this year at center with Jarrett Allen & DeAndre Jordan.
Malika Andrews: Kenny Atkinson said that Kyrie Irving (facial fracture) will wear a mask when he returns to practice. Atkinson does not know how long Irving will be required to wear the mask.
Malika Andrews: When Nets practice opened up, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were shooting together on a far hoop. Irving, who sustained a facial fracture this week, did not practice.
Anthony Puccio: Nets say Kyrie Irving has been diagnosed with a left side facial fracture, which he sustained yesterday during workouts. He is currently listed as day to day.
Nets Daily: Just saw Kenny Atkinson who told us @Kyrie Irving is “okay.” Atkinson accompanied Irving for a checkup after taking an elbow to the head in a scrimmage.
Ian Begley: Nets PG Kyrie Irving was hit with an inadvertent elbow in a pick up game today, GM Sean Marks says. He’s with Kenny Atkinson getting the injury checked out, so Atkinson won’t be at today’s press conference.
Steve Bulpett: Per Stevens, Kyrie Irving (knee) will not play tomorrow in Philadelphia. He's unsure of what that means for Wednesday here v. Detroit.

Brian Robb: Sounds like Kyrie Irving (sore hip) could miss another game or two this week. Brad Stevens doesn't think its a long-term issue but wasn't sure about his availability for Wednesday vs. Hornets.
Scott Souza: #Celtics Brad Stevens said plan coming into season was always to find 8 to 12 games to rest Kyrie Irving - as well as Al Horford. Allowed the hip is more than rest. Said he's not sure about Wednesday night yet.
Tim Bontemps: Kyrie Irving will miss tonight’s game against the Nets with a left hip strain.
"I make my living with my eyes," Irving said after practicing fully with the Celtics on Sunday afternoon. "My whole entire body, but my eyes are just one of the most important things that I need to play this game. It was swollen, and there was light sensitivity after the initial hit. "Watched it a few times, trying to figure out whether or not it was malicious or not, but I don't think it was. So I'll let it go. But I got hit pretty good, and I'm just glad to get a few days' rest, as well."
Jared Weiss: No Kyrie Irving tonight after getting his eye scratched by Marco Belinelli in San Antonio. 3 point guards are out tonight after Minny announced Rose and Teague are out.
Chris Forsberg: Celtics say Kyrie Irving is questionable vs Timberwolves due to right eye irritation. Aron Baynes and Robert Williams both remain out.
Celtics coach Brad Stevens wasn't sure whether the injury could force Irving to miss time. "Kyrie has a scratched eye," Stevens said. "So he'll have antibiotics for that. I don't know what that means beyond tonight." Irving, meanwhile, addressed the media after the game wearing a pair of sunglasses. Asked about his condition, Irving said: "I'm wearing sunglasses, so not too good. I'll be all right, though. [He] smacked the s--- out of me. He just caught me pretty good."
Michael C. Wright: Kyrie Irving said both eyes were injured in the third quarter against the Spurs. Brad Stevens said he'll be on antibiotics for treatment.
Tom Westerholm: The Celtics’ injury report for Washington includes Baynes and Horford (both questionable) and Hayward (doubtful with his illness). No Kyrie, however, which is a good sign.
Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving said he wasn't concerned after tweaking his right shoulder late in Boston's 128-100 victory over the New York Knicks. Irving left Thursday night's game with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter and the outcome already decided after getting tangled up. He had ice put on the shoulder while he watched from the bench, and did his television walk-off interview with it still on, but had nothing on the shoulder in the locker room, and said he'd be fine.
Scott Souza: Kyrie Irving said he's not traveling to Cleveland for Saturday's preseason finale. He taken a couple of hits on ribs in practice past few days. #Celtics

The Sixers would be best served if Simmons and Paul rethink their plans, though Simmons “is clearly aware of sanctions available to the organization to fine and suspend him, including withholding of salary,” according to Wojnarowski. An NBA source said Wednesday that Simmons initially asked for a trade at the draft combine in Chicago “right after” the end of the 2020-21 season. The Game 7 home loss to the Hawks occurred on June 20, with the combine running from June 21-27.
