Despite recent speculation that Nate McMillan was on the chopping block, that’s never been the case with the Indiana Pacers. He received another year on his contract, for 2021-22, after an “unprecedented” season because of countless injuries, COVID-19 and the NBA restart in Orlando. IndyStar has reported that the results from the restart — the Pacers are 4-2 going into today’s game with the Houston Rockets — wouldn’t have any impact on McMillan’s future.
He confirmed that Wednesday with IndyStar: "This has been done for a while now." It was signed in July. And the Pacers came to him about it. Former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy said on ESPN's Zach Lowe's podcast last week that McMillan's job was "in trouble" which led to speculation about who his replacement might be. With his deal being done for more than month, that clearly had no impact on the Pacers getting the deal done now.
"I'm looking forward to what we look like with all of those guys," McMillan said. We haven't had a lot of time to have them all together." They haven't had their other All-Star, Domantas Sabonis, in the restart because of a left foot issue (plantar fasciitis). "My hope is that we will be healthy next year and see what we can do with a full roster," McMillan said. "I'll have that opportunity and the organization thought it was only fair. It's just another year but I'm OK with that."
Scott Agness: Pacers president Kevin Pritchard on extending Nate McMillan’s contract: “What Nate has done in four seasons with our franchise merits this extension. Between injuries and changes in personnel, he and his coaching staff have adapted and produced positive results.”
Indiana Pacers coach Nate McMillan has agreed on a contract extension, league sources told ESPN. McMillan, who had one year left on his contract, finalized the deal in recent days, sources said. Well-respected among his coaching peers for his personal character and hard-playing teams, McMillan has the Pacers positioned as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. He has been credited with maximizing the organization's roster despite several stretches of significant injuries in recent years.

The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday they have signed Head Coach Nate McMillan to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, no terms were released. McMillan will enter his third season as Pacers coach after serving as the team's Associate Head Coach for three seasons under Frank Vogel. In his first two seasons, the 54-year-old McMillan has a 90-74 record and helped guide the Pacers to two playoff appearances.
"I'm really proud of what Nate and our coaching staff have done," said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard. "Nate is very deserving of this extension. We have a wonderful culture and he has been a big part of implementing that culture. He's dedicated leader, a very good coach and we're lucky to have him here with the Pacers." "I'm very appreciative of Kevin and Mr. Simon (team owner, Herb Simon) for this show of faith in what we are doing," said McMillan. "Going back two years ago when I was hired, the trust Larry (Bird) and Mr. Simon had in myself and my staff meant a lot. Now with this extension, it's an affirmation of what we all – front office, coaches, players, staff – are trying to accomplish."
Indiana Pacers coach Nate McMillan has reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension that will take him through the 2020-21 season, league sources told ESPN on Wednesday. McMillan, who would've entered the final season of his original three-year deal, delivered one of the NBA's most impressive coaching performances last season. In the aftermath of the Paul George trade to Oklahoma City, McMillan led the Pacers to a 48-34 record and a seven-game first-round series against Cleveland in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

J. Michael Falgoust: With a lot of key free agency business taken care of, #Pacers have pivoted towards contract extension talks with coach Nate McMillan, I'm told.
J. Michael Falgoust: There doesn't appear to be anything imminent regarding a new deal for McMillan but based on what I'm told by league sources I dont expect this to be dragged out or take a lot of wrangling. It seems a foregone conclusion (and should be) it'll get done #Pacers
