More on Willie Reed Free Agency

There’s no official announcement from the club yet, but Willie Reed has announced himself his deal with Olympiacos.
Olympiacos Piraeus is in negotiations with American center Willie Reed. The Greek club has been working towards closing a deal with the former NBA big man and the talks have reached an advanced status.
Tony Jones: Willie Reed, Whom the SLC Stars recently took first in the G-League draft, turned down a $2 million deal to play in China, League sources tell The Athletic. Reed is focused on getting back into the NBA, sources say
Winters in Utah can get cold. That’s why Willie Reed is prepared to dress for the occasion as he starts a new chapter of his basketball journey. “Luckily, I still have my same coat from when I was with the Brooklyn Nets,” said Reed, who was drafted No. 1 overall during Saturday’s NBA G League draft by the Salt Lake City Stars.
Reed is also familiar with members of the Utah Jazz organization, including assistant coach Alex Jensen, his college assistant coach at St. Louis, and Alec Burks, as natives of Missouri. “I’m definitely excited. Alex Jensen was the coach for me in college (St. Louis) that really worked with the bigs every single day,” Reed said, during a conference call. “Coach (Rick) Majerus was hands on, but I spent a lot of time with Alex Jensen and I spent some time with him in the G League when he was down with Canton Charge.
Candace Buckner: Day 3 into free agency and some of the #Wizards's targets are coming into focus: Washington expressed interest in Jamal Crawford, Luc Mbah a Moute, Dante Cunningham and Willie Reed. All these players were pretty much July 1 calls.
The Oklahoma City Thunder recently held a free-agent workout that included big men Willie Reed and Jeff Withey among others, according to two league sources. Both people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they’re not authorized to speak publicly on the topic.
Orazio Cauchi: At least a couple of Western Conference teams have showed interest in free-agent big man Willie Reed, per source. His suspension for domestic violence has slowed down his free agency process, though.
Reed, who signed a one-year league minimum deal $1.5 million with the Clippers this summer after the Heat drafted rookie Bam Adebayo and went in another direction with its frontcourt, filed the claim in part because Christian Dawkins, one of the 10 people arrested on federal corruption charges Tuesday, advised Reed to turn down a preliminary three-year, $15 million deal by the Heat early in the free-agency juncture with the promise of a bigger pay day elsewhere.
Free agent center Willie Reed has reached an agreement with the LA Clippers, league sources tell ESPN.
Michael Scotto: Hawks have expressed interest in Dewayne Dedmon, league sources told Basketball Insiders. Willie Reed also on the radar, per @Alex Kennedy
David Aldridge: ClIps, Dubs, Hawks, Sixers, Pacers among teams on trail of Miami C Willie Reed (5.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg in 71 games last yr). Heat still in mix.
For all involved, this remains a time of year when business trumps basketball. "I love Miami and I'd love to be back there, but I understand it's a business," Reed told HoopsHype. "I also have a family. I signed for the minimum there last year; it was a two-year deal, and I felt I had a good enough season to opt out. "Now, I have an opportunity to take care of my family after being in the D-League and overseas for multiple years. This is an opportunity for me to make sure my family is set for life. If Miami can provide that opportunity, I’d be more than happy to be back there."
Reed is open to re-signing and raves about his time with the Heat. With that said, minutes are sparse behind Whiteside and Reed may end up being out of Miami’s price range. “I love Miami and I’d love to be back there, but I understand it’s a business,” Reed said. “I also have a family. I signed for the minimum there last year; it was a two-year deal, and I felt I had a good enough season to opt out. Now, I have an opportunity to take care of my family after being in the D-League and overseas for multiple years. This is an opportunity for me to make sure my family is set for life. If Miami can provide that opportunity, I’d be more than happy to be back there.”
“I feel like I’ve gotten better every single year and my goal for next season is to win the Most Improved Player Award,” Reed said. “I have really high expectations for myself next year. With more minutes, I think I can be the Most Improved Player in the NBA. I want to be an elite shot-blocker and make a big impact. I think it’s just a matter of getting more minutes and experience.
“I think that I’m underrated and it definitely motivates me,” Reed said. “But I’ve only played in 101 career NBA games, so I get it and it’s fine with me. Now, it’s my job to show everyone what they haven’t seen. I try to get better every single day. That’s why I’m in the gym every night when everyone else is sleeping. That’s why I’m back in the gym early in the morning, doing yoga and on-court work when nobody else is around. I want to be the best player I can possibly be. I’m going to give this everything I have. If I don’t become a star, at least I’ll know that I gave it everything I had in me. I’ll be able to look myself in the mirror and know that I gave it my all.
What is the likelihood of the Heat re-signing backup center Willie Reed? Miami isn’t optimistic. Though Miami could use cap space to sign him, keeping him likely would be need to be with the Heat’s $4.3 million exception. But Reed figures to get more than that. That money could be enough for a backup big such as Mike Muscala or David Lee.

It is why it can be so complex for someone like Willie Reed to talk about what might come next, despite affection for the Miami Heat so strong that there were tears at season's end. "I mean you have an emotional attachment to these guys. This is a special team. We made history this year," Reed said last week of the Heat's rise from 11-30 at midseason to 41-41. "Of course I want to be here. But we will see what happens when it comes to time to be able to talk and discuss things like that."
For now, future salary has yet to be broached. "We spoke just about how a good season it was and how I progressed and have grown," he said. "But there haven't been talks about anything else yet, kind of just coming in here and just working out, making sure they see you and let them know that I love being here and I want it to work out. So we'll have to see what happens."
He is expected to turn down his $1.6 million player option with Miami to enter free agency this summer, as more money is expected to be available on the open market. “I don’t know what it’s going to be like for me, to be honest,” Reed said when asked about this offseason during his exit interview. “Obviously I’ve never been in a position like this before. So I’m just trying to trust the process with things that I’ve done before, continue to work on my body, continue to work on my game and then deal with that when the time comes.”
Not only did backup center Willie Reed enter the week leading the Heat in plus/minus (minus 2), but he’s averaging as many points per 48 minutes as Rudy Gobert and DeAndre Jordan (17.8) and more than Robin Lopez and Marcin Gortat, and his 16.9 rebounds per 48 is 13th among all NBA centers. By opting out this summer, he will likely get far more than the $1.5 million he’s due from Miami next season.
The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed center Willie Reed. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Alex Kennedy: Source confirms Willie Reed is nearing a 2-year, fully guaranteed deal with the Miami Heat. Player option for year 2. @Ira Winderman first.

Alex Kennedy: The San Antonio Spurs have expressed interest in Willie Reed, according to sources.
Michael Scotto: Source: Nets won't give Willie Reed a qualifying offer. He will be an UFA. His 19.3 PER would've been 52nd in NBA if he played enough mins.
Willie Reed Jr.: In the interview I got confused. Wasn't the new coach I sat with and had a talk with it was the GM and assistant GM. - RT: Nets Daily: "I would love to be in Brooklyn, but that's up to them." Pass or play? Willie Reed. http://bit.ly/1TPIV7i

D'Angelo Russell looking great in workouts

Who would Wolves staff consider to be early candidates for the most improved player on the roster? 2) Do the Wolves see McKinley Wright IV as a sort of “Pat Bev-in-training”? 3) Will there really be a concerted effort to apply full-court defensive pressure? — @Tresio The two players I have heard a lot of buzz about looking great in workouts: McDaniels and (drum roll, please) … Russell. Sounds like he is locked in right now.

NBA execs expect breakout season from Darius Garland

The 21-year-old guard should thrive in pick-and-roll action with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley as rim rollers, while the addition of Lauri Markkanen, who shot 40.2 percent from downtown last season, will help space the floor and open pick-and-pop opportunities. “I think Garland’s kind of gotten lost in the shuffle in terms of people knowing who he is because of Colin Sexton,” an NBA scout opined. “If he stays healthy, I like picking him.”
I have heard A-Rod and the new ownership is bully on the Wolves. What major moves do you predict they will make to improve the product in the next couple years? — @SPORTSviKINGs17 So far, it appears like the immediate target is just modernizing things, bringing a franchise that has often been at the back of the pack to more of the cutting edge when it comes to technology and innovation — that sort of thing. Of course, the main goal will be to make the Timberwolves more competitive on the floor, but I think there is a real emphasis on everything around the basketball, as well. What can be done to change the perception of the organization? They are taking a long look at culture and values and defining characteristics. Those might seem like mumbo jumbo to dyed-in-the-wool hoop heads, but those are things that Lore and Rodriguez are very familiar with in their other businesses. They can dive in on them right away as they work to get up to speed on the intricacies of basketball, the collective bargaining agreement and the team in general.
