Injured rookie guard Lonnie Walker IV is confident he will be back with the Spurs "very soon" following a rehab stint in the G League. Speaking to reporters after practice Tuesday with the Austin Spurs at the Spurs practice facility, Walker said his injured knee feels "great." The workouts with the developmental squad mark a significant benchmark in his recovery from the right medial meniscus tear he suffered in the preseason.
"It feels like I am back to Lonnie Walker," he said. "Just continue to find my rhythm and everything. But day by day, it is nothing but improvement. Every day, I can see significant difference on my leg and just how I play overall."
Walker credited his teammates, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, general manager R.C. Buford and Spurs great Tim Duncan with "continuing to encourage me." He also said he has tried to be patient with the recovery process. "You got to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run," he said. "So, it's all about stages and taking steps little by little until it's my opportunity. And when it comes, hopefully, I can play the best I can play. "
The comeback of Spurs rookie Lonnie Walker IV takes another step forward Sunday, with the team announcing he would be practicing with its G-League affiliate. Walker will work out with the Austin Spurs through Wednesday at the NBA club's practice facility in San Antonio. The Spurs are on the road until then, finishing a four-game trek in Chicago and Minnesota.
Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV underwent an MRI examination this morning in San Antonio that revealed a right medial meniscus tear. The injury occurred at the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter of last night’s Spurs-Pistons preseason game.
Jeff McDonald: Spurs say Lonnie Walker IV has torn the meniscus in his right knee and will have to undergo Monday to repair. He tore meniscus in the same knee last fall before his freshman season at Miami. Story to come.
Michael C. Wright: Per a source, Spurs first-round draft pick Lonnie Walker IV sprained an ankle and is out for the rest of summer league. Nothing major here. Just no need to push it at this juncture.
