Duane Rankin: “He’s fine. He was ready to go and we found out that same day. It wasn’t anything earth shattering about the whole deal. He was just sick.” #Suns coach Monty Williams on Cam Johnson, who missed Game 6 of WCF Wednesday with a non-COVID illness.

McGee signed a one-year deal for a reported $5 million with the Suns after winning Olympic gold with Devin Booker in Tokyo. With Dario Saric recovering from a knee injury suffered in the NBA Finals, McGee will play a key role as a backup five to Deandre Ayton. “I feel like my game definitely helps Deandre Ayton in a major way just for the veteran leadership alone,” said McGee, 33, a three-time NBA champion who enters his 14th NBA season averaging 7.8 points on 57.1% shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for his career. “Also when he gets into foul trouble and having that veteran big to come in that’s 7 foot, block shots, defend, rebound and does all the intangibles that a real big man does,” McGee continued.
“Every big man that has ever played with Chris Paul has done well,” McGee said. “I just feel like Chris Paul is definitely the head of the snake and he’s definitely going to lead us to the finals again.”
JaVale McGee went to the same high school as recent Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Chris Webber, in Detroit Country Day. His journey there was a little bit different, though. While Webber grew up in Detroit and the private school was located in nearby Beverly Hills, Mich., McGee was living in Flint, which is nearly an hour away.
That’s just a outline of a much deeper part of the newest Phoenix Suns’ big’s life he shared with Shannon Sharpe on an episode of “Club Shay Shay” that posted earlier this week. “Every day, I think about the struggles that we went through when I was younger,” said McGee, the son of 1984 Olympic gold medalist Pamela McGee. “Warm the water up in the microwave so I could take a shower or wash up before going to school. Living in Flint, but going to Detroit Country Day. We had to wake up early like 6:45, drive 45 minutes to school every day.”
