Get Up: It is not a forgone conclusion that Ty Lue will end up as the Clippers' next head coach, according to @wojespn. "I'm told he's going to meet with New Orleans soon. Houston wants to talk him."
If Lue ends up with the Clippers and Chauncey Billups doesn’t land one of the other head coaching jobs (New Orleans, Houston, Indiana), then Billups could end up as Lue’s lead assistant. Several prominent members of the Clippers organization hold Billups in high regard, per sources. Billups was the club’s color analyst on television last season but, per ESPN, is interested in coaching.
Sixers assistant coach Kevin Young also interviewed for the head coaching job, and he made a strong impression on the organization, sources said. The Sixers also interviewed Clippers assistant Ty Lue this week, sources said, but Lue is emerging as a strong candidate to replace Rivers with the Clippers. The Clippers are planning to interview other candidates, starting soon, sources said.

Lue, a former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach, has some options. The Clippers reached out to him Monday about being a candidate to replace Rivers, who is a close friend, according to sources. Sources added that representatives of the New Orleans Pelicans are scheduled to fly to the West Coast for an informal meeting with Lue on Friday. He’s also scheduled to interview for the Houston Rockets job next week. But Lue is interested in coaching the Sixers.
Clippers assistant coach Tyronn Lue is among the candidates for the head coaching position, league sources confirmed to The Athletic. ESPN reported that ESPN NBA color commentator and former Knicks and Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy will also garner consideration.
As the Clippers move forward, they are embarking on a thorough coaching search. There is no clear-cut No. 1 candidate yet. The hiring process could take several weeks, though the team is open to offering the position to the right candidate immediately. This was a not a move they made with another coach waiting in the wings to be hired, league sources said.
“Looks like there’s a good chance Ty gets it,” one Eastern Conference executive told HoopsHype. “It definitely puts a lot of pressure on other teams that want him.”
However, he has other suitors. He’s set to interview with Philadelphia this week and New Orleans and Houston are also interested, according to people in the league.
