NBA rumors: James Harden to join Team USA in Tokyo Olympics

Shams Charania: Nets star James Harden has committed to play for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics, joining teammate Kevin Durant on the USAB squad, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Kyrie Irving is unlikely to play as he recovers from his ankle injury.

More on Kyrie Irving Injury

Malika Andrews: Kyrie Irving remains out for Nets-Bucks Game 7 on Saturday, Steve Nash says. Nash says Irving still has some "miles to make up."
Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving could miss time after suffering an ankle injury in Game 4 of his team's second-round matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski provided an update Monday on KJZ: "I don't think there's a great expectation that he can turn this around and be ready for Game 5," Wojnarowski reported.
Davis, a member of the Celtics' 2008 championship-winning squad, had some thoughts on the injury. In an Instagram reply, Davis seemed to imply that it was a result of basketball karma after Irving stomped on Boston's center court logo earlier in the playoffs. "Karma is real. Energy is real no matter what you guys say," Davis said in another IG comment. "That logo means something negative or positive. Ky wished that on hisself (sic). Energy is real, always have respect for other no matter if its (sic) a logo are (sic) not."

Rachel Nichols: I’m told Kyrie was in a walking boot and using crutches after spraining his ankle during today’s Nets-Bucks Game 4. Steve Nash says that x-rays on the ankle were negative and that Kyrie will undergo further testing/evaluation tomorrow.
Jeff Zillgitt: Steve Nash on Kyrie Irving: "I have no idea what’s going to happen with Ky in the coming days. We’ll cross our fingers and hope that it’s better than – I don’t know, better than what? – better than missing the next game."
Rachel Nichols: With Kyrie (ankle sprain) now officially out for the rest of the game, Nets Coach Steve Nash told me the Nets are going to have to make up his offense "by committee" and that in the locker room at halftime he told the other guys they have to be more aggressive offensively.

Kyrie Irving returned from his one-game absence wearing tape on his injured right index finger. He was effective — but hardly efficient and nowhere near pain-free. “It sucks, man,” Irving said of the injury after Tuesday’s 122-111 loss in Detroit. “Just shooting very well on the season, want to continue. So, you just have different hiccups that happen, especially on my shooting hand. “It’s uncomfortable, but at the same time I don’t want to make any excuses. I’m out there, put myself out there, do a lot of treatment on it and we’re down a few players obviously, as well, so you just want to go out there and compete and worry about the pain later. But doing the best I can.”
Kyrie Irving was back on the shelf Saturday night, but the Nets hope it’s only a one-game absence. The star point guard missed the Nets’ 124-108 loss to the 76ers at Wells Fargo Center because of a sprained right index finger that he suffered in Friday’s loss to the Raptors. “I think to be determined [how long he’s out], but I think it very well could be day-to-day,” coach Steve Nash said before tipoff. “I think we’re thinking of it day-to-day right now, but you never know. We’ll see how it responds. Hopefully it is day-to-day and we’ll see him back in action on Tuesday.”
Shams Charania: Nets’ Kyrie Irving is listed out tonight against the 76ers due to right index finger sprain.
All of this is already on display, in the opening seconds of their first training camp together. People who have seen them work out or play pick-up rave about how good Durant and Irving look, physically. The Nets are already conceding they must approach the season with caution in terms of managing the two players’ health. And there have already been, let’s not call them controversies, because neither episode really rises to the level, but two things that have happened involving Durant and Irving that could put a head coach, or a general manager, or a teammate (several teammates, if you count how many guys Sean Marks would have to trade to bring Harden to Brooklyn) in an uncomfortable position.
Meanwhile, Durant's co-star, Kyrie Irving, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on March 3, and indications are that he has no plans to play for the Nets until next season. Irving has been doing basketball-related workouts as part of his rehabilitation process, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Spencer Dinwiddie understands that expectations are raised to championship if Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving return for the Orlando playoffs. But the Nets guard is unsure what his star teammates will decide. “That’s the billion dollar question. But that’s not something I can answer,” Dinwiddie said Wednesday morning on ESPN’s “First Take.” “I know they’re both working really hard. They’re two of the hardest working in the NBA on the court, and two phenomenal players. If they are able to return and that’s the decision they make, our aspirations turn from playoffs to championship. “If they’re not able to return, which they’ve pretty much said that’s kind of the stance that they’re taking, we still want to be a team that grinds to get to the playoffs and makes a run in the playoffs. But we also understand the talent they add with being two of the top-10 players in the league and KD being, in my opinion, the greatest scorer of all time.”

Durant hasn’t been traveling with the Nets on road games, and neither has Irving since getting hurt on a West Coast road trip in November. Kenny Atkinson — who insists there’s no danger of detachment from the team — said that’s not going to change as long as their rehab is better served at home. But he said that could change eventually. “No, we’re around them enough. I always hark back to the priority’s got to be what’s best for them from a rehab standpoint. That overrides everything,” Atkinson said. “And sometimes they want to come, and we’re like ‘No, you need to be on the AlterG at home.’
“We just can’t provide the same type of rehab conditions on the road, and that’s priority number one. I think we’ll continue to do that. But I think in the future you’ll see that change as the rehab processes get further down the road.”
Bobby Marks: Kyrie Irving had 8 sets of unlikely bonuses in his contract for $125K each. He earned 1 for shooting > 88.5% from the FT line. His cap hit for the 2020/21 season will be adjusted at the end of the season to $33,460,350.
Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is considering treatment options on his right shoulder impingement -- including the possibility of surgery, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Malika Andrews. He's expected to reach a decision in the next few days, per sources.
Malika Andrews: Kenny Atkinson said he “wouldn’t go there” when asked if there’s a concern Irving will miss the rest of the season. Right now, the plan is that he will see a specialist and go from there. Atkinson said the shoulder has been continuously bothering Irving.
Kyrie Irving continues to struggle with the shoulder injury that caused him to miss 26 games earlier this season and is scheduled to see another specialist this week, Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. "That's about all I can tell you," Atkinson said. "His shoulder continues to bother him. That's about the extent of it now."
Atkinson said Tuesday that it was not a specific play or practice that caused Irving to be in pain again, but rather something he's been dealing with continuously. "The shoulder is a tough thing," Atkinson said. "I just think it was an on and off thing where it's bothering you. Some days you feel good, some days you don't feel good. But I think it got to the point it was, 'Hey let's see another specialist.'"
“I wouldn’t be surprised if you see more small lineups. It’s just the trend now,” Harris told The Post. “Even now I’m setting screens in big actions. I never would’ve thought I’d be a screener either, but that’s just like how it is. I’m like picking and popping all the time.” Irving has sat the past five games with a knee sprain. After a week off for the All-Star break, the Nets resume play Thursday in Philadelphia. While Irving’s status for Thursday is up in the air, he is expected back eventually. And the aforementioned quintet has produced the best Net (plus-16.7) and Offensive (133.3) Ratings of any Irving-led lineups that have logged 15 minutes.
Alex Schiffer: Kenny Atkinson doesn’t say whether or not Kyrie Irving will return after the All-Star break. Wants to see how he looks when the team returns to practice next week.
Anthony Puccio: It’s been 9 days since the Nets said Kyrie Irving would be re-evaluated in “one week.” Kenny Atkinson said last night that he’s been evaluated everyday, and that there’s no update. Doubtful he suits up on Wednesday with the All-Star break coming up.
Greg Logan: #Nets say Durant and Irving are out at Indy. Also Musa and Pinson, who have G League assignment. So everyone who played in TO is available.
Brian Lewis: As expected, #Nets are leaving Kyrie Irving home for this two game trip. They said last Sunday he’d be re-evaluated in a week, buy with a road game Monday in Indiana, facing the #Pacers always seemed unlikely at best.
Christopher Lavinio: Kyrie Irving speaks out after a scary fall Saturday vs. Wizards. Irving was diagnosed with a right knee sprained and will be re-evaluated in one week.

Brooklyn Nets star guard Kyrie Irving said he would undergo an MRI after spraining his right knee. Irving left Saturday night's 113-107 road loss to Washington in the fourth quarter, after getting tangled with the Wizards' Bradley Beal and falling back awkwardly on the knee. "What a week," Irving said. "I'm OK, though. Just gotta get an MRI. X-rays were negative, just [have to] go home and see what's going on."
Irving has a history of right knee injuries. He strained his right knee in February 2019 when he was with the Boston Celtics. "I've done some pretty decent things to my knees in the past," Irving said. "The most important thing is just making sure my ACL was fine. It was just a weird, weird, weird fall. I just felt a lot stretching and tension afterward. Just a bad fall."
Malika Andrews: The Nets announce that Kyrie Irving is available to play tonight for the first time since Nov. 14. Wilson Chandler (left hamstring tightness) and Garrett Temple (right knee contusion), who both missed the Nets game against the Heat on Friday are also available to play.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Irving has been out since mid-November with a right shoulder injury. He recently returned to 5-on-5 workouts in practice and is preparing for his return Sunday in Brooklyn.
Malika Andrews: Kenny Atkinson said that Kyrie Irving’s shoulder responded well to playing 5-on-5 for the first time yesterday. Historically, a concern for the Nets in bringing back injured players is how they respond to an increased workload. Irving will go through 5-on-5 again on Saturday.
Brian Lewis: Atkinson on Kyrie Irving: “I’m pleased with how we’re progressing.” Says he’ll work out to tomorrow and be evaluated after that. #nets
After missing nearly two months with a right shoulder injury, Irving said he expects to be reevaluated within the next week. It is hoped that being cleared to play, Irving said, will be the next step. "We just see where we end up in the next few days," Irving said Thursday. "Realistically, we will reevaluate tomorrow. See how I feel tomorrow. Then go Saturday -- probably another practice."
Malika Andrews: Kyrie Irving will not play tonight against the Thunder, the Nets announce. Irving has now missed 25 games. That is the longest stretch he has been out in his career.
Brian Lewis: Irving got the shot Dec. 24. He and the #Nets will assess after two months and will hope he can avoid arthroscopic surgery. But that’s certainly possible. He admits he considered it, but it’d take him out 3-4 months.
Alex Schiffer: Irving said surgery “has definitely crossed my mind,” especially with Durant out this season. Said he thought about the present and trying to play with team and worry about next year when it comes. He will continue to rehab and see where it goes.
Brian Lewis: Kyrie Irving; “It just sucks man. It really is disheartening.” Went to Phoenix to see a shoulder specialist. #Nets
Bobby Marks: Kyrie Irving will now miss out on two bonuses of $125K each for falling short of playing 60 games this season. The games played bonus were tied into statistical achievements. This will bring the total up to $375K in lost incentives for the season.
Irving is actually suffering from “thoracic bursitis” and he’s out until at least Jan. 7 against the Thunder, according to Heavy.com. But Aktinson pushed back before Brooklyn hosted the Knicks on Thursday. “What you’re telling me — whatever that report said is not true,” the coach said. “We’re still in the same place the last time I talked. Like I said, the thing is we haven’t gotten to the contact with him. We’re on-court workout situation but the contact just hasn’t been cleared yet. I think that’s the next hurdle. I wish I could tell you when that is. Hopefully sooner rather than later.”

Ja Morant as a pitchman? 'There's going to be a wait-and-see approach with him'

The message of this new ad seemed just as obvious, given the controversy that swirled around Morant earlier this month: His recent off-court issues have cast doubt on his ability to be a corporate spokesperson. “There’s going to be a wait-and-see approach with him,” said Doug Shabelman, CEO of Burns Entertainment. “I don’t anticipate him signing with new companies in the next year, because people want to see is he going to rehabilitate himself, get himself to a better place, and then, how is it going to go? The hope for Ja is that nobody talks about this in 6-to-12 months.”
Most experts believe Morant has all the makings of a redemption story with a sweet ending, but the process will need to be calculated and strategic. “Right now, he is young enough and in a good enough position that he can rehabilitate his whole image based in how he comes out of these next few weeks,” Shabelman said. “Nothing has been decided, and the public is very forgiving when people are willing to do the work.”

Nikola Jokic on Joel Embiid: 'He's gonna be remembered as one of the most dominant players'

The Sixers sat both Embiid and James Harden (sore left Achilles) as Jokic compiled 25 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists. Afterward, Jokic dished out nothing but high praise for the Sixers superstar looking to win his own MVP crown. “I think he’s a great player,” Jokic said of Embiid. “I think he’s gonna be remembered as one of the most dominant players in the league. The guy’s a beast, and he’s so talented. “He can affect [the game] many ways on the floor. He can post up, he can face up, he can shoot 3s. He can defend really well. He can, in some situations, guard 1 through 5. So he’s a really, really good player.”
Sixers coach Doc Rivers, when asked about the discourse surrounding the MVP race, said people should appreciate Embiid and Jokic. “It’s like we can’t celebrate people,” Rivers said before the game. “The league is in a great place. It’s in an amazing place. You’ve got Joel Embiid and Joker, two centers, in a non-center league, dominating the league. You’ve got Giannis, and I always put him as a whatever, because we don’t know what [position] Giannis is, but he’s one of the best players in the league. Jayson Tatum is playing unbelievable. Kevin Durant, if he wasn’t hurt, you can just keep going.
