Marc Stein: Dallas, I’m told, is expected to reach agreement to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr. early in free agency. Hardaway and Boban Marjanovic are two Mavs free agents they were determined to retain and sources say they will. 30-ish minutes ’til the bell rings. More: marcstein.substack.com/p/free-agency-…
Rival teams interested in Bobby Portis are highly pessimistic that they can pry Portis away from Milwaukee, despite the Bucks’ financial constraints in trying to keep him, and Dallas is even more of a lock to re-sign Doncic’s close friend Boban Marjanovic. Beyond the extension for Doncic, retaining Marjanovic is the one certainty about the Mavericks’ offseason that has already seen them move away from a planned pursuit of Lowry.
Marc Stein: Extreme confidence in Dallas that they will re-sign popular center Boban Marjanovic, league sources say. More free agency from me all week via marcstein.substack.com
Marc Stein: The Mavericks are finalizing a deal with Boban Marjanovic, league sources say
Boban Marjanovic is signing a two-year, $7M deal with the Dallas Mavericks, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.
Boban Marjanovic moved from the LA Clippers to the Philadelphia 76ers during this season and the Serbian big man liked his new environment. The 30-year-old center believes he will almost certainly stay in Philly: “The league is still played and according to NBA rules, nothing can be said before July 1. On July 1, the first on the line are the main player’s negotiations and then, from July 3, it’s time for the rest of us. I don’t know what will happen… I should, almost 90 percent, stay in Philadelphia but that’s not known yet, just speculation. It was nice for me there, so why not”, he said, per Zurnal.
Boban Marjanovic finished his fourth NBA season in a tough way with the loss to Toronto Raptors, though he’s already looking forward to the next one with the Sixers. “It’s hard to think about everything after last night. I really want to be here, I have gained great experience, I enjoy, I love the city and I feel every day that I spend here as a blessing, a great thing” 30-year-old Marjanovic replied to the press about his status after the 2018/19 season, as adapted by mondo.rs.
“We wanted to add more size at that spot but not give up athleticism, not give up shooting, and Jon Leuer was really the only guy out there that we thought fit everything that we wanted in that spot. Shot 38 percent from three, 6-foot-11. He’s a very good athlete with great quickness. He’s a guy we had our eye on for a couple of years and we just thought would be a really good fit to what we wanted.” The Pistons had just enough cap space left after addressing those two critical needs to entertain what Van Gundy called “an outside-the-box move” – the offer sheet to San Antonio’s Marjanovic as a restricted free agent. They correctly gauged that San Antonio, after coming to terms with Pau Gasol, wouldn’t have enough cap space left to match their offer to Marjanovic.
David Mayo: Source confirms Spurs have opted not to match #Pistons' offer to Boban Marjanovic. Three years, $21M to play center in Detroit.
Paul Garcia: Per Boban's agent, once Boban completes his physical, he'll be signing his new contract with DETROIT BASKETBALL soon.
The Pistons will waive center Joel Anthony and power forward Cameron Bairstow, and renounce the rights to point guard Steve Blake, in order to clear space for Marjanovic, according to a team source who added that Blake still is in the mix to be re-signed as third point guard.
Marc Stein: The Spurs, league sources say, are resigned to losing fan favorite Boban Marjanovic, unable to match Detroit's offer sheet
Bobby Marks: Re: the Boban offer sheet. SAS protected by the "Arenas provision" but would need to use cap space to match based on non bird with Boban.
Marjanovic -- you can just call him Boban -- figures to be all Detroit's soon enough, the newest member of the Pistons. The San Antonio Spurs can drag this out for three days before deciding whether to match Detroit's three-year, $21 million offer sheet to Marjanovic, but they cut a deal with Dewayne Dedmon on Thursday morning that symbolized a team moving on to the next guy.
Marc Stein: Detroit is signing Spurs restricted free agent Boban Marjanovic to a three-year, $21 million offer sheet, according to league sources
Zach Lowe: Spurs have extended a qualifying offer to Boban Marjanovic, making him a restricted free agent (for now).
The Spurs would love to resign the 7-foot-3 behemoth, but will face competition. Marjanovic’s free agency is restricted, meaning the Spurs can match any offer sheet he receives. Team will be intrigued by Marjanovic as a backup center, and that could push his price tag too high.
One of the more interesting decisions this summer for the Spurs will be on Boban Marjanovic, the 7’3” center and NBA cult hero. He is a restricted free agent, he is going to get a healthy raise from the $1.2 million he made this season, but how much will teams pay for a quality big whose role may not fit smoothly in a small-ball league (he can play in some rotations but not all). The Spurs would like to keep him, but if another team comes in over the top they may fold that hand.

Who would Wolves staff consider to be early candidates for the most improved player on the roster? 2) Do the Wolves see McKinley Wright IV as a sort of “Pat Bev-in-training”? 3) Will there really be a concerted effort to apply full-court defensive pressure? — @Tresio The two players I have heard a lot of buzz about looking great in workouts: McDaniels and (drum roll, please) … Russell. Sounds like he is locked in right now.
The 21-year-old guard should thrive in pick-and-roll action with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley as rim rollers, while the addition of Lauri Markkanen, who shot 40.2 percent from downtown last season, will help space the floor and open pick-and-pop opportunities. “I think Garland’s kind of gotten lost in the shuffle in terms of people knowing who he is because of Colin Sexton,” an NBA scout opined. “If he stays healthy, I like picking him.”

I have heard A-Rod and the new ownership is bully on the Wolves. What major moves do you predict they will make to improve the product in the next couple years? — @SPORTSviKINGs17 So far, it appears like the immediate target is just modernizing things, bringing a franchise that has often been at the back of the pack to more of the cutting edge when it comes to technology and innovation — that sort of thing. Of course, the main goal will be to make the Timberwolves more competitive on the floor, but I think there is a real emphasis on everything around the basketball, as well. What can be done to change the perception of the organization? They are taking a long look at culture and values and defining characteristics. Those might seem like mumbo jumbo to dyed-in-the-wool hoop heads, but those are things that Lore and Rodriguez are very familiar with in their other businesses. They can dive in on them right away as they work to get up to speed on the intricacies of basketball, the collective bargaining agreement and the team in general.
