NBA rumors: Pau Gasol finishing career in Spain?

I always wondered about both you and Mark when you reach the very end of your careers. Would you go back and play a year professionally in Spain, just to kind of round out your career start where you came from? Did that ever interest you? Pau Gasol: Yeah, yeah. No, it had appeal for sure. And interest but, and I said it since I kind of left Spain or FC Barcelona to come to the NBA. But I always kind of said, you know, the longer I play in the NBA, which I love, it’s going to be harder for me to go back and play one year in Spain. Marc [Gasol] has said this thing recently that he would love to play us last year in China that he played for before he came to the NBA and it means so much to him, just like Barcelona means to me, but, but we’ll see. Maybe works out maybe it’s in the books, maybe It’s not. Again, it has a certain appeal. But, but I still like to play in the best league with the best players.

More on Pau Gasol Free Agency

Gasol admitted that there are retirement thoughts circling in his mind. After all, he becomes 40 years old in July. “It’s a possibility that there is there too. I’ll have 40 springs this summer, which is not a small number. I understand that sooner or later, whether this summer, next season or another, my retirement is inevitable. I hope not already,” Gasol added. “I hope that the foot recovers so that it can allow me to play a little more. We will see how much more. Enjoy one last season.”
Ramona Shelburne: Pau Gasol tells @NBAonESPNRadio he’s hoping to play for Spain in the 2020 Olympics if he can rehab his injured foot in time. Next year in the NBA is a possibility, too.
Pau Gasol wasn’t really thinking about a possible return to Europe before getting signed by the Portland Blazers. While Gasol’s Spanish national team teammates Nikola Mirotic and Alex Abrines will be coming back to EuroLeague next season, having both joined Barcelona, the plan for the two-time NBA champion was always to stay in the NBA.
“I really didn’t weigh the possibility of returning to Europe,” Gasol said per Marca. “My idea was to remain in the NBA. After seeing all the options, the one that Portland had was the best and the one I felt fits best to my career at this time.” Gasol also mentioned a potential return Europe would possibly bring him back to the team he played before moving to the NBA: Barcelona.

Another name to watch is Pau Gasol. The Pistons have interest in him, a person with firsthand knowledge of the situation told the Free Press. A partnership could be natural, considering Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem is Gasol’s former agent. Tellem attended Gasol’s wedding last weekend.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Free agent C @Pau Gasol wants to return next season and says he's recovering well from left foot procedure. He tells ESPN: "My recovery from surgery has been smooth and I expect to be fully cleared for basketball activities in early August. I cannot wait to start training again."
Gasol has previously said he thinks Milwaukee -- with Giannis Antetokounmpo -- has a real shot at winning a championship ... and it's clear he still feels that way. Despite continuously battling injuries during his 18th NBA season, Pau Gasol hopes to continue playing at the highest possible level. He was drafted in 2001 and is a NBAer since, but talks about a potential return to FC Barcelona Lassa never ceased. Gasol, 38, talked about the issue with Movistar Plus. “This has been a topic of conversation since I left Barca in 2001. I’ve always said it would be nice, that I would be excited. However, as time goes by difficulty rises. Every time I move on it gets more complicated, I want and can continue playing in the NBA. I never say never, but the door is closing” he mentioned.
Albert Nahmad: Bucks will sign Pau Gasol to a ROS min deal, for which a $527K salary would create a net obligation and cap hit of $333K, leaving them $546K below tax line, which, as noted by @Bobby Marks, ensures they'd stay under even if Tony Snell earns all $500K of his realistic bonuses.
“Pau Gasol is an exceptional individual and the ultimate professional,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “We are grateful for his contributions on the court, in the locker room and in our community.”
Pau Gasol: Today, I bid farewell to @San Antonio Spurs. It’s been a dream to play for 1 of most storied franchises in @NBA history, an honor to be part of Spurs family. To all the staff, my teammates, the coaches, RC, Pop and, above all, the fans, thank you for making this place so special. #GoSpursGo!
Bobby Marks: If Pau Gasol signs on Sunday after clearing waivers, Milwaukee will be $546K below the luxury tax. Tony Snell has $500K in unlikely bonuses for wins and playoff success. Bucks would stay under by $46K if all the incentives (good chance) are met.
Adrian Wojnarowski: The San Antonio Spurs and center Pau Gasol have agreed on a contract buyout, clearing the way for the six-time All-Star to be playoffs-eligible for his next team, league sources told ESPN.

All that said, Gasol’s future with the Spurs beyond this season is a mystery. But no matter the outcome of his time in San Antonio, Gasol is not considering retirement. He still believes there is more basketball to be played and plans to do so until he feels ready to step away. “In two summers, I might think about it a little more,” Gasol said. “It might be an option then, maybe. And maybe not because I love what I do. I work my ass off to do what I do at this stage, to keep up with the pace of the game and the progress and the development of the game today. I take pride in that. That’s what makes me who I am.”
Melissa Rohlin: Pau said he wanted to re-sign w the Spurs, likes the way they manage vets. Said he trusted they’d take care of him when he opted out.

On April 12 at Utah he scored his 20,000th career point to become just the second European player to eclipse 20,000 points for their career, joining Dirk Nowitzki.

The Spurs are also working to finalize a new deal with free-agent center Pau Gasol, league sources said. Gasol declined his option for the 2017-18 season.
The Spanish big man recently touched on his playing career, as well as re-signing with the San Antonio Spurs, where he made it clear, he is looking to play as many seasons he can in the NBA. "I want to play the maximum number of seasons, as long as I feel good. I have played 16-years in the NBA and I hope to play some more, but I have to keep working and respect any injuries, as I have so far."
As for re-signing with the Spurs after opting out of his deal, Pau says both sides are looking forward to getting a deal done and is hoping to reach an agreement soon. Pau also spoke on the West getting stronger this offseason, saying the Spurs are still one of the best in the West. "All the teams in the West, especially the top teams, are getting much stronger to compete and try to beat the first level of teams, like the Spurs."
Gasol has decided to decline an option worth $16.2 million next season and become a free agent, league sources said Tuesday. His intention seems to be to negotiate a new long-term deal with the Spurs at a lower annual salary that could offer the team instant salary cap relief with which to lure additional free agents in July. Like the third-act plot twist of one of Gasol’s favorite operas, the decision comes as something as a surprise for a player set to turn 37 next month.
Pau Gasol indicated he would opt in to his $16 million player option for next season. “Now that I know more (about) the conditions I’m playing with and the circumstances, I can figure out better how to be effective,” he said.
Gasol signed a two-year deal worth roughly $30 million with the Spurs. The second year of the deal is a player option worth $16 million. Asked if he intended to opt-in Year 2 of his contract, Gasol agreed it’s a safe bet. “My intention is to continue here, and to be here as long as I can,” said Gasol, who will turn 37 before the start of the 2017-18 season.
