The Indiana Pacers will not buy out T.J. McConnell's $3.5 million contract for $1 million, a league source with direct knowledge of the situation tells IndyStar, though they’ve yet to make their intentions official. The league had to reset guarantee dates after COVID-19 interrupted the offseason but has not announced when it would be.
When McConnell was signed to a two-year deal last summer, the Pacers put in a $1 million buyout option on the backup point guard that they could exercise before the draft (which is now Nov. 18). McConnell would become a free agent and the Pacers would save $2.5 million while opening a roster spot.
Pacers: OFFICIAL: We have signed free agent guard T.J. McConnell to a contract. McConnell averaged 6.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field over 76 games for the 76ers last season.
Scott Agness: Also, with the Pacers guaranteeing Alize Johnson’s contract for next season, they now have 11 players under contract and two more needing to sign: T.J. McConnell and Edmond Sumner. Two (of 15) roster spots open.
Mark Montieth: Kevin Pritchard told me today he is "in deep negotiations" with TJ McConnell and is hopeful of reaching a contract agreement within the next few days.
Michael Scotto: TJ McConnell’s two-year, $7 million deal with the Indiana Pacers is guaranteed for $1 million in Year 2, a league source told @The Athletic. The agreement was first reported by ESPN.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Free agent TJ McConnell has agreed to deal with Pacers, league source tells ESPN.
John Gambadoro: Suns not shopping the 6th pick for a veteran point guard as per reports. A few names to keep an eye on in free agency are Cory Joseph, Pat Bev, Darren Collison, TJ McConnell. Look if Suns can come away with a true Power Forward, a starting caliber point guard, a backup big who can shoot and a young point guard to develop (draft) they will be on the right path. There is not unlimited money to spend here!
The 76ers expect to see how the season plays out before deciding whether to retain reserve point guard T.J. McConnell, a league source says. The Woj Pod mentioned that the Sixers had some "conversations" about signing McConnell to an extension. The podcast did not suggest that those talks have been serious.
There will be a market for the fourth-year veteran. Teams have already approached the Sixers about acquiring him in a trade. The Phoenix Suns did that in recent weeks, according to several sources. The Suns offered a second-round pick, and the Sixers declined.
