Mike Norvell treated his FSU opening statement like a wrestling promo. And I mean that in the best way possible. Very Memphis of him.
It's time for Memphis to hire another great football coach. Column: dailymemphian.com/section/sports…
When you look at all these coaching hot boards — ours included — the lack of minority candidates is striking. It’s a problem the NCAA and universities need to address in a meaningful way. Shouldn’t be like this.
NEW COLUMN: In Mike Norvell, Memphis has a template for what its next football coach needs to be. So yes, he's gone to FSU. But he can't be forgotten.
Roddy Ricch got all hits on his album im sorry
Great story about a wonderful kid. dailymemphian.com/section/opinio…
UTAH! ITS ALL LOVE FOREVER.!! THANK YOU FOR THE WARM WELCOME.! YOURS TRULY 99.!!!! 🙏🏾❤️
Road recap: Grizzlies can't keep pace with hot-shooting Jazz in Utah - The Daily Memphian dailymemphian.com/section/sports…
Jeff Green ties a season-high with 19 and the Grizzlies lose 126-112 in Utah.
Grizzlies now 6-16.
Silver lining: another really nice game for Jaren offensively.
FINAL: Jazz 126, Grizzlies 112. Memphis has lost nine of its last 10.
Jaren Jackson Jr. was one of the few brights spots tonight. Finished with 26 points
The Grizzlies are on the verge of losing 9 of 10.
Not great. Also not shocking.
The Jazz have a promotion where fans get free Chick Fil A if an opposing player misses consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter. Dillon Brooks missed his first, and it got pretty loud in here. Lots of boos when he made the second
Jazz 97, Grizzlies 84 at the end of the third. Memphis cut the deficit to seven midway through the quarter, but Utah closed on a run. JJJ leads all scorers with 22
Grizzlies Twitter is quiet tonight. I'm assuming everyone is out celebrating the Tigers win
A little defense please and then this game will not suck as bad to watch.
Grizzlies had outscored Utah 21-13 in the third, but then Ingles and Bogdanovic his back-to-back triples to push the lead back to double-digits. Grizzlies trail the Jazz 88-75 with 3:43 to play
Mike Norvell is headed to Florida State. As Memphis wins the title, remember the party, not the goodbye. My column: dailymemphian.com/subscriber/sec…
With Jonas Valanciunas in early foul trouble, seeing a lot of what I wrote about in this week's mailbag column: Jackson facing up and driving against a spaced floor. He's got 17, but Jazz are 11-19 from 3 and lead 69-54 at half.
HALFTIME: Jazz 69, Grizzlies 54. Jazz outscored Memphis by a 37-18 margin in the second quarter.
Nice half for Jaren Jackson Jr., who has 17 points (6-11), two boards and a block. Drew three fouls on Gobert.
69-54 Jazz at halftime. Great first half for Jaren Jackson Jr. showing no fear against Gobert. He's got 17 on 6-of-11 shooting.
Jeff Green killing the Grizz.... I mean while not playing for them....
Utah is on an 21-4 run in the second quarter. Grizzlies trail 53-40 with 6:33 to play until halftime. Jazz are shooting 69.5 percent overall (16-23) and are 9/14 from 3.
Utah outscoring Memphis 21-4 to begin 2Q and now leads 53-40 with 6:33 left.
Including free throws, the Jazz have made 25-of-37 shots
Grizzlies 36, Jazz 32 at the end of the first. Both teams shot 67 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3, but Memphis had six more shot attempts (14/21 vs. 10/15).
Quick start for Jaren Jackson — 10 points and 4/7 from the field in almost nine minutes
Jaren Jackson Jr. four straight ISOs on Rudy Gobert:
Drive and dunk
Drive and draw foul
Into post for a jump hook
Jaren is working Gobert. He already has 10 points
Somebody forgot to tell Jaren Jackson Jr. that Rudy Gobert is the 2x reigning DPOTY. JJJ has 10 early for the Grizz. 20-20 with 4:41 left in 1Q.
Jaren Jackson Jr. takes Gobert off the dribble and draws a foul on him. This is somewhat anecdotal, but seems like JJJ has been doing a good job of knowing which defenders he should post-up and which he should drive against
The Memphis Hustle finally hit a snag on the road at South Bay.
Their first loss after a G-League record 10-0 start.
Yuta is with the Grizzlies on this road trip, otherwise the Hustle would likely be 11-0.
First trip to Utah. Really impressive atmosphere. Great ovation for Jae Crowder. pic.twitter.com/LmJCaKbI71
Definitely seems like Jae Crowder was a fan-favorite in Utah. Got an ovation from the crowd during intros
About 10 minutes from game time here in Salt Lake City. Grizzlies are preparing to play a Mike Conley-less Jazz squad pic.twitter.com/3RdJx15VDQ
You good @Evan Turner ????
I hope Memphis talks to Chip Long. Norvell’s guy from way back, and was his OC here. Left to be OC at Notre Dame. Young, great recruiter that loved it here and helped recruit kids on roster. I wanna keep the offense and keep things rollin.
Nice gesture by the Jazz, welcoming back Grayson Allen and Jae Crowder in the visitors hallway pic.twitter.com/G0kAqIPxL9
Mike Norvell getting choked up in postgame press conference. Very emotional
Mike Norvell just said "we're looking forward to going to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl, baby." But I suspect that does not happen. Has not been decided.
keep dat same energy .
Norvell did as well as you can with those questions. Florida State is gettin an absolute gem. That guy gave his heart and soul to Memphis and that program, and made the job and program infinitely better than ever before. I’ll always root for him.
What a way to go out for Mike Norvell. Did everything you could ask a Memphis coach to do.
I hate that college football makes coaches have to do all this stuff in the middle of what should be the biggest moment in program history. It really sucks for the team.
Mike Norvell, Memphian.
Memphis is your AAC champions!
Memphis football is going to the Cotton Bowl.
