Anthony, according to a source, is relieved at Jackson’s ouster. Because of his separation from his wife, La La, Anthony no longer was amenable to moving far from his 10-year-old son, Kiyan. Anthony’s wife said as much Tuesday during a TV interview. Whether Anthony pushed for a buyout to sign with Cleveland as a free agent is a matter of debate. One source said he wanted to remain in New York and only would have asked for a buyout if things became untenable.

Cavaliers GM David Griffin refused to even think of parting with the younger Love for Anthony in the winter, but he might be gone soon as his contract is up and he’s reportedly getting interest from the Bucks. But another general manager would have a difficult time dealing for Anthony if Love is not part of the package. The over-the-cap Cavaliers don’t have even first-round picks to peddle and Anthony’s trade kicker balloons his pact to over $33 million. “I don’t see any trade of Melo to the Cavs that makes them better and that the Knicks would agree to,’’ one NBA GM said.

Contract extension on the radar for Karl-Anthony Towns

Towns has publicly committed to the Timberwolves several times, most recently at the end of the 2020–21 season, when he told reporters he wanted to have a career like Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant, spending it all with one team. According to someone close to Towns, nothing related to that goal was altered in any meaningful way by Rosas’s dismissal. A contract extension is already on his radar.
