NBA Rumor: Courtney Lee Injury
43 rumors in this storyline

What compels a player — one rehabbing from Achilles tendon surgery who won’t take the court this season — to sign up for months away from home and no in-person interaction with those outside the NBA’s set up? Powell didn’t view it as a sacrifice because he has constant access to the team’s training staff, workouts and activities alongside his teammates. Neither did the Mavericks, who are using two of their 17 roster spots on Powell and injured guard Courtney Lee.

Courtney Lee heading to the Orlando bubble?
Marc Stein: The Mavericks’ Courtney Lee notified the team this week that he is eager to join them at Disney World despite a calf injury expected to end his season, league sources say. Lee is a popular veteran in the Dallas locker room who emerged as a starter in March before the NBA shutdown
Marc Stein: Dallas’ forthcoming addition of veteran guard Trey Burke does not require an additional roster move after Willie Cauley-Stein’s decision to bypass playing in the NBA restart, which puts Lee on course to join the Mavericks’ traveling party of 37 at Disney World near Orlando
Brad Townsend: Mavs officially announce Courtney Lee injury, but no mention of surgery. Release just says he won’t be available when the team resumes workouts on July 1.
Mavs keeping injured Courtney Lee on roster?
Brad Townsend: I’m told Mavs have no plans to waive Courtney Lee, despite calf injury that required season-ending surgery. Ideally they want Lee in Orlando. He’s a respected locker room guy, perhaps most importantly by Luka Doncic. If Lee remains on roster, no addition, including Broekhoff.
One obvious possibility to replace Lee is Ryan Broekhoff, who was waived by the Mavericks on Feb. 11 to make room for the signing of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist after Kidd-Gilchrist was waived by Charlotte. Broekhoff and wife Katie and 1-year-old son Jackson still live in Dallas. Broekhoff reportedly in recent weeks has received interest from teams in Greece and Russia.
Marc Stein: The Mavericks plan to explore the marketplace but cannot make a signing unless Lee is formally waived. As @Tim MacMahon noted, Lee had a productive March for Dallas after the Mavs had previously lost two key contributors, Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson, to long-term injuries
Mavs looking for reinforcements after Courtney Lee's injury
Marc Stein: The Mavericks will be among the teams looking for roster reinforcements Tuesday when the NBA’s one-week transaction window opens after veteran swingman Courtney Lee suffered a calf injury during the shutdown that required surgery, league sources say
Tim MacMahon: Source confirms @Marc Stein report that Mavs SG Courtney Lee suffered a significant calf injury in a “freak accident.” Lee, a valued veteran presence, averaged 6.6 points on 50% FG in 22.8 minutes per game during March.
Bobby Marks: Only players that opt-out of Orlando, test positive for cornonavirus or are on the protected/excused list for health reasons as a result of COVID-19 can be replaced. Dallas is at the league maximum 15 players and 2 Two-Ways.
Marc Berman: Courtney Lee is in game for 1st time this season.
Stefan Bondy: Courtney Lee is available for his season debut.
Mike Vorkunov: Courtney Lee and Mitchell Robinson will both play tonight against the Bucks. No set plan for Lee. Fizdale will use the game to gauge his minutes. He won’t throw him out there “for a lot of minutes.”
Mike Vorkunov: Courtney Lee says he’s cleared to practice again for the Knicks. Practiced yesterday but says he’ll need “multiple practices” before he’s ready to play in a game. Won’t put a timetable on a return.
Ian Begley: The Knicks say Courtney Lee has been re-evaluated and cleared for full participation in practice. Lee has been sidelined since the start of the preseason with a neck ailment.
Courtney Lee, who missed his 20th straight game to start the season, is “getting closer” to returning from a bizarre bout of neck spasms, Fizdale said. Lee participated in contact drills in practice earlier in the week for the first time since sustaining the injury in training camp. Fizdale said Lee would be checked by team doctors before the Knicks depart for a Sunday road game against the Grizzlies. Pending the results, there’s a chance Lee could make his season debut in Memphis.
Mike Vorkunov: Courtney Lee is closer to coming back from the neck injury that’s kept him out the whole season so far. Here he is playing 1-on-1 pregame with Knicks assistant coach Royal Ivey, who can still hit a jumper.
Courtney Lee participated in contract drills for the first time during Monday’s practice, an encouraging sign even though there is still no concrete timetable for him to make his season debut. The veteran guard has been out with a neck injury.
Stefan Bondy: Courtney Lee (neck strain) started doing contact drills today. He’s getting closer to a return to the court.
Mike Vorkunov: Courtney Lee says his neck injury persists. Says it’s a nerve injury but also “There’s spasms. There’s strains… A little bit of whiplash.” Will meet with doctors and be evaluated again on Nov. 12.
Courtney Lee’s mysterious neck injury sidelined him for 32 days and counting with no real updates or recovery timetable. Adding to the mystery is that the Knicks have declined to make Lee available to the media, even though he is traveling with the club. The last time Lee spoke was a month ago, when he downplayed the severity of the neck injury that occurred in the third day of training camp.
David Fizdale said Lee underwent treatment and is waiting to see how the neck responds. The Knicks have called the injury a neck strain or neck spasms. “I always tell y’all, I don’t pay attention to the medical report,” Fizdale said. “It’s just, ‘When is he playing for me?’ That’s usually the only information I want.” The coach added, “It’s just one of those injuries, it’s not how much you do, it’s how it comes along. It’s going to heal when it wants to.”
Ian Begley: Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) practiced today. His status for Friday is unclear. Courtney Lee (neck) didn’t practice. David Fizdale said he hasn’t made any final decisions about a starting lineup against Golden State.
The concern regarding Courtney Lee’s mysterious neck injury that has put him out since the third day of training camp continues to grow. The Knicks’ starting shooting guard last season is on the trading block, but his extended absence appears unrelated. Lee saw neck specialists Monday and didn’t travel with the team to Milwaukee. Lee rejoined the squad in Miami on Tuesday, clearly trying to make it back this season despite an unclear role. Coach David Fizdale said Lee will need to undergo more tests to find either a remedy or the cause of recent neck spasms that occurred after he returned to practice in the days leading into the season opener and suffered a setback. Fizdale made a reference to the neck pain traveling to Lee’s chest. Lee’s original injury occurred early in camp after a hard foul by Ron Baker.
Stefan Bondy: Courtney Lee is out again tonight. He’s seeing a specialist next week about his neck spasms. He has not played at all in the preseason or regular season.
Tommy Beer: Fizdale says Courtney Lee won’t play tonight, as he’s only got a few practices in. Fiz says he’ll re-access the situation after “a few games.”
Steve Popper: Courtney Lee did practice
Marc Berman: Fizdale says no timetable for Courtney Lee. Suffering from neck pain that’s running into back.
Stefan Bondy: Courtney Lee (strained neck) did not practice today
Marc Berman: Courtney Lee missed practice with strained neck.
Lee was felled by a bug and was too sick to travel. “He was so sick today he couldn’t get on his flight so hopefully he gets on a flight early enough [Wednesday] to make a practice beforehand,” Hornacek said. “That’s what we’re hoping. But that’s going to be tough too after sitting out for five days.”
Courtney Lee had fluid drained from his problematic shooting hand and hoped to play Wednesday against the Hawks. The Knicks starting shooting guard, who suffered a sprained right hand earlier in the season, said he re-aggravated the injury in Sunday’s loss to the Celtics. Tests then uncovered the fluid buildup, which was removed with a needle Tuesday.
Ian Begley: Jeff Hornacek says he expects Courtney Lee to play tomorrow vs. Atlanta. Lee missed practice today due to a wrist injury.
