NBA Rumor: Courtney Lee Injury

What compels a player — one rehabbing from Achilles tendon surgery who won’t take the court this season — to sign up for months away from home and no in-person interaction with those outside the NBA’s set up? Powell didn’t view it as a sacrifice because he has constant access to the team’s training staff, workouts and activities alongside his teammates. Neither did the Mavericks, who are using two of their 17 roster spots on Powell and injured guard Courtney Lee.

Courtney Lee heading to the Orlando bubble?

Courtney Lee, who missed his 20th straight game to start the season, is “getting closer” to returning from a bizarre bout of neck spasms, Fizdale said. Lee participated in contact drills in practice earlier in the week for the first time since sustaining the injury in training camp. Fizdale said Lee would be checked by team doctors before the Knicks depart for a Sunday road game against the Grizzlies. Pending the results, there’s a chance Lee could make his season debut in Memphis.

Mike Vorkunov: Courtney Lee is closer to coming back from the neck injury that’s kept him out the whole season so far. Here he is playing 1-on-1 pregame with Knicks assistant coach Royal Ivey, who can still hit a jumper.

David Fizdale said Lee underwent treatment and is waiting to see how the neck responds. The Knicks have called the injury a neck strain or neck spasms. “I always tell y’all, I don’t pay attention to the medical report,” Fizdale said. “It’s just, ‘When is he playing for me?’ That’s usually the only information I want.” The coach added, “It’s just one of those injuries, it’s not how much you do, it’s how it comes along. It’s going to heal when it wants to.”

The concern regarding Courtney Lee’s mysterious neck injury that has put him out since the third day of training camp continues to grow. The Knicks’ starting shooting guard last season is on the trading block, but his extended absence appears unrelated. Lee saw neck specialists Monday and didn’t travel with the team to Milwaukee. Lee rejoined the squad in Miami on Tuesday, clearly trying to make it back this season despite an unclear role. Coach David Fizdale said Lee will need to undergo more tests to find either a remedy or the cause of recent neck spasms that occurred after he returned to practice in the days leading into the season opener and suffered a setback. Fizdale made a reference to the neck pain traveling to Lee’s chest. Lee’s original injury occurred early in camp after a hard foul by Ron Baker.
