NBA Rumor: Dennis Schroeder Free Agency

13 rumors in this storyline

Earlier in the week, Ian Begley of SNY reported that the New York Knicks have interest in going after Lakers point guard Dennis Schröder in unrestricted free agency this summer. However, it also sounds like he isn’t the only option they’re considering, and they may not be the team to give him the giant offer he’s reportedly seeking. Begley clarified during a recent appearance on SNY (emphasis mine): “As they (the Knicks) look ahead towards free agency, obviously the immediate focus is on this playoff push, but they’re also keeping an eye on the offseason. So Schröder is a guard that some of them like, and Lonzo Ball has some support within the organization, but I don’t think it’s uniform support on Lonzo, or probably Dennis either.

“The interesting thing here on Schröder is he’s already turned down, according to ESPN, an extension offer from the Lakers that was around four years and $84 million, so you would think that the Knicks are going to have to make a big offer, around $20 million a year to sign Schröder. I don’t think they would want to get into a bidding war for Schröder, I think they have several options that they will end up considering in the offseason, but Schröder is definitely on that list… He is certainly somebody that the Knicks are giving internal consideration to.”

New York will have enough cap space to make Schroder a competitive offer in free agency. The club is projected to have at least $50 million in cap space in the 2021 offseason. Point guard is a key position for the Knicks heading into the offseason — Elfrid Payton, Derrick Rose and Frank Ntilikina will all be free agents in 2021, so they will probably have at least one new lead guard in 2021-22. Between now and free agency in August, the Knicks will have to decide if Schroder is the right fit for a lineup that’s likely to heavily feature RJ Barrett and Julius Randle next season.

That’s viewed as a key factor considering there is mutual interest between he and the Lakers on either agreeing to a contract extension now or a new deal come free agency. “First off, yes, because of my teammates,” Schroder recently answered when asked if he envisioned being with the Lakers for the foreseeable future. “I said it before, even first day, it felt like we’d been together for a month or two. Chemistry is amazing. That’s the reason why I think I want to be here longterm. But like I said before, it’s got to be fair on both ends. If it’s fair, then I don’t have any problem. “It’s going to be great to be here long term, for sure.”

Dennis Schroeder is a point guard who likes to score and is right in the peak of his powers. The LA Clippers could use a player like that as they push for an NBA title. But don’t count on that happening, as the 27-year-old German told the MagentaSport podcast in a recent episode that he’s not interested in leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder. “Yes, I have received offers,” Schroeder said, “But I never wanted to go to the Lakers, the Clippers, or all the names that my agents have called.”
