Candace Buckner: #Wizards coach Scott Brooks: “Its pretty safe to say” that Dwight Howard will not return to play for the rest of the year.
Fred Katz: Brooks on if the Wiz have shut down Dwight Howard: “Not officially. He’s still getting his work in, the hamstring problem. It hasn’t yet turned a corner for him, but we still have 3 weeks or so. … It’s gonna be tough but you never know.” Howard is still doing non-contact work
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard is up to short burst running pic.twitter.com/apKP8bIDxj

Fred Katz: Scott Brooks on Dwight Howard’s progress: “We’re in no rush. When he’s ready to play, he’s ready to play. Hopefully, it’s this season.”
Candace Buckner: When Dwight Howard does return, he will not do live action practice. Just 1-on-0 on-court work, says Scott Brooks. “This is his next step.”
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard is not at the #Wizards practice facility. The team returned to workouts tonight for the first time since the All-Star break.
Shams Charania: Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium: Wizards center Dwight Howard will return to Washington D.C. on Wednesday to start on-court work. Howard has rehabilitated in Atlanta since undergoing spine surgery in late November.
Candace Buckner: It’s been two months since Dwight Howard’s surgery and Coach Scott Brooks gives an update: “We don’t really know when he will be available to be on the court but he’s moving in the right direction.”
Fred Katz: Wednesday will make for exactly 2 months since the Wizards announced Dwight Howard’s back surgery and estimated a 2-3 month timetable until he’s re-evaluated. But don’t expect to hear anything then. Wizards hoping to get a better idea of Howard’s status some time post All-Star.
Fred Katz: Dwight will rehab in Atlanta: “If I would’ve been around the team after the surgery, I would’ve wanted to get out there & play…I think our team doctors had the best solution: Go home, get your mind right, get your body right, & when you return, let’s get to that championship.”
Candace Buckner: Here in Atlanta, Dwight Howard just walked into the #Wizards locker room
With Dwight Howard out, the Wizards are weighing their options, but as of now they do not plan to sign a free agent or broker a trade to replace him, a person familiar with the situation told NBC Sports Washington. The Wizards want to first see what they have with their in-house replacements, knowing Howard will be available to return at some point this season.
The Wizards have considered free agent options to add help at center, but there aren’t any out there that have interested them at this time. Capable centers are hard to find, especially midseason.
Candace Buckner: Scott Brooks says Ian Mahinmi will “got back into the mix” when asked how the Dwight Howard news will impact the rotation.
Howard underwent an L4-L5 lumbar microdiscectomy earlier today. The procedure went as planned with no complications. The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Marina Del Rey, CA, and was recommended after consultation with Dr. Watkins and Wizards Director of Medical Services and Orthopedist Dr. Wiemi Douoguih determined that the disc herniation was causing severe nerve irritation and gluteal pain. Howard’s progress will be re-evaluated in approximately two to three months.
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard’s surgery will be on a disc in his back, not his glute, per a source. Howard had been having pain in the piriformis, but the disc was what was causing pain in his buttocks. Howard went to Los Angeles to see a nerve specialist earlier this week.
Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard is undergoing a surgical procedure Friday to alleviate pain from a gluteal injury, league sources told Yahoo Sports. The injury has limited the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year to nine games this season, and if the procedure is successful, a typical recovery timeline is two-to-three months. However, there is a chance Howard could return sooner, sources said.
Chris Haynes: Washington center Dwight Howard will undergo a surgical procedure to alleviate pain from a gluteal injury, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.
Shams Charania: Dwight Howard is undergoing surgery on L4/L5 discs in his spine and hopeful of return within eight weeks, league sources said.
Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard probably will need a surgical procedure to provide relief from a gluteal injury that has frequently sidelined him this season, league sources told ESPN. Howard received a recommendation from a nerve specialist in Los Angeles on Thursday and might seek further consultation before making a final decision on a surgery that would cause him to miss a significant portion of the regular season.
Fred Katz: Brooks on Howard seeing a nerve specialist in LA: “We’ll know more information in the next couple of days…[the injury] hasn’t gotten much better in the last couple of days.” Brooks said Thomas Bryant is “definitely” staying in the starting lineup.
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard did not travel with the team on its two-game road trip
Chase Hughes: Dwight Howard is out tonight. This is his fourth straight missed game. Brooks said he tried to play last game, but couldn’t.
Candace Buckner: Brooks on Dwight Howard, who will miss his fourth consecutive game: “It’s a slow process. He’s doing everything he can. …We thought he was going to give it a go last game and he’s just not there.”
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard was not at shootaround when media entered the court this morning. Howard has been out hurt the past few games. We’ll find out more when Scott Brooks talks pregame tonight.
Chase Hughes: Dwight Howard is out tonight. Thomas Bryant will start. Okaro White is inactive with Troy Brown Jr. back.
Chase Hughes: Dwight Howard did not practice and may not travel on the road trip. Otto Porter practiced, but is dealing with a hamstring injury.
Fred Katz: Brooks says Howard is still day to day with the gluteal soreness.
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard is out. Thomas Bryant is starting, per Brooks.
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard has left the court with a #Wizards trainer. Even before the game, Howard was in so much pain, he had trouble sitting down and putting on his socks. Still an issue with the buttocks muscle
Candace Buckner: #Wizards Coach Scott Brooks on Dwight Howard making his season debut tonight vs OKC: “No restrictions. We’re excited about having him. He brings a couple things we need.”
Chase Hughes: Dwight Howard says he’s playing tomorrow vs OKC.
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard confirmed to reporters he will play tomorrow against the Thunder. Didn’t say how many minutes he’d play.
Shams Charania: Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium: Wizards center Dwight Howard is planning to make his season debut in Washington on Friday against OKC — allowing the team to view roster with an important starter in lineup.
Clay Bailey: The Wizards will be without F. Markieff Morris (concussion protocol) and Dwight Howard, who has not played this season recovering from Gluteal soreness.
Brooks has three years remaining on a five-year, $35 million deal. Washington has allowed a league-high 125 points a game after losing 136-104 to the Clippers. Dwight Howard, who has been sidelined with a buttocks injury, is expected to make his season debut this week, league sources told Yahoo Sports, and the Wizards hope he can provide them with a defensive boost.
Candace Buckner: Lost in the more recent #Wizards developments is Dwight Howard’s progress. When you think about it: the team’s 10-day road trip is essentially his training camp back in DC. Nothing’s in stone but I suspect Howard makes his season debut Nov. 2 vs OKC Thunder (on ESPN)
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard did NOT travel with the team on its five-game road trip
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard is NOT playing tonight in the second game of the season
Chase Hughes: Scott Brooks was non-committal about whether Dwight Howard will return during the road trip. He said he will travel with the team and continue to practice as he works his way back.
Candace Buckner: Now Dwight Howard is running full-court with the youngest players. First time that we (media) have seen so on-court work with teammates pic.twitter.com/oiUE0xRAKL
Chris Haynes: Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard will not play in tonight’s season-opener against the Miami Heat, league sources tell Yahoo Sports. He still needs more practice time.
Candace Buckner: Scott Brooks confirms that Dwight Howard is OUT tonight for the #Wizards season opener “We just don’t feel that he’s quite there yet.”
Chase Hughes: Dwight Howard says he doesn’t know if he will be ready for the season opener on Thursday against Miami, but didn’t rule it out.
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard, who practiced for the first time, asked about the chances he’ll play Thursday in season opener: “See how it feels. I’ll do whatever I can to make myself available for all 82 games but the main thing is making sure that I’m healthy for the rest of the season.”
Candace Buckner: Dwight Howard on if he expected the injury to keep him out this long: “The main thing is that I’m healthy when playoffs come and later on in the season. So wasn’t no rush to try to get back and heal up for the first game but I’m happy that I’m progressing the way I have been.”
For now, the Wizards are in true day-to-day mode as they, especially Brooks, repeat the same motto. “Hopefully, he continues to progress,” he said, “and [we can] get him on the court shortly after.”
Chase Hughes: Brooks says Dwight Howard has yet to resume basketball activities (light shooting, etc.) since receiving a pain injection on Tuesday. Coach mentioned Monday as possible for him to get back on the court.
Fred Katz: Brooks said Dwight Howard won’t get back on the court until “probably Monday.”
Shams Charania: Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium: Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard visited a specialist in New York and has piriformis injury, which is a muscle in the buttocks. The injury isn’t serious and Howard will continue treatment.
The Wizards close out their preseason slate on Friday with a home game against the Guangzhou Long-Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association. After that, the Wizards have five days off before they host the Miami Heat in their season opener on Sept. 18. Buckner reports that before last night’s game in New York, Brooks was asked if “it was safe to say” Howard won’t play in the opener if he missed the preseason slate. Brooks’ response? “Yeah, that’s safe.”
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard had a setback over the weekend with his lower back, Brooks says. He’s going back to DC for a pain injection when the team goes to Detroit.
Candace Buckner: A little more context: Dwight Howard went through a light workout with coaches during the day off on Saturday (no contact). By Sunday, he felt soreness again but still went with the team to NYC. Today he saw a specialist and it was recommended he return to DC for pain injection
Chase Hughes: Scott Brooks says everyone but Dwight Howard is available to play tonight against the Heat.
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard will go with the Wizards on their upcoming road trip even if he isn’t able to play, Scott Brooks says.
Fred Katz: Dwight Howard (back) is out.
Fred Katz: Reporter asks Scott Brooks about the status he provided about Dwight Howard last week. Brooks goes to an early-season confession: “I said a lot of things last week, huh? That’s like the third, ‘You said last week.’ I lied a lot to you guys.”
Chris Miller: Dwight Howard WILL NOT play in @Washington Wizards first preseason game Monday vs. @New York Knicks. He told me all he needs is about two practices to be ready to play in a game. #DCFamily
Chase Hughes: Scott Brooks says Dwight Howard will likely be out all week.
The Wizards were again without two of their most prominent offseason additions on Wednesday, the second day of their 2018-19 training camp, as Dwight Howard (back soreness) and Austin Rivers (neck spasms) were not a full-go.
Rivers at least appears to be trending in the right direction, as head coach Scott Brooks said he “felt much better” the day after leaving Tuesday’s practice with neck discomfort. Howard, on the other hand, doesn’t appear as close to returning as initially thought. “He’s progressing, but it’s going to be a couple more days before we see how he feels there,” Brooks said. That means Howard could end up sitting out most of, if not all of, the rest of training camp.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Brooklyn has tendered guard Bruce Brown a qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent, sources tell ESPN.
Bobby Marks: QO on Brown is $4,736,102. Brown has full bird rights and Brooklyn can bring him back despite being over the salary cap and deep into the luxury tax. However, signing Brown to a $10M contract for example would cost BKN an extra $36M toward the luxury tax.

Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul is continuing to put the spotlight on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with the arrival of a new college basketball tournament, The Undefeated has learned. Paul and the Basketball Hall of Fame have partnered in the development of the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off on Nov. 22-23 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The two-day doubleheader will feature HBCUs Morehouse College, Virginia Union, West Virginia State and Winston-Salem State. The games are also expected to be televised nationally, a source said.
“This is a great honor to be invited to the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off with some of the best HBCUs in the country. It will also be a great opportunity for our young men to tour the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, right after my teammate and Virginia Union’s very own Ben Wallace goes into the Hall of Fame in September. I would like to thank Chris Paul for continuing to give HBCUs the opportunity to showcase our prestigious schools on the biggest stage,” Virginia Union coach Jay Butler said in a statement.
Kevin Love: Question: Why the f*ck can’t we be accepting or even open to the idea of someone breaking down to have a breakthrough? People are scared of facing their insecurities and perceived weaknesses (me being one of them)…and let’s be real, EVERYONE has their own set. This is because we use these insecurities and weaknesses against each other!!! What I’ve found and believe to be the truth is that once your insecurities are out in the open, this becomes your weapon, therefore disarming everyone else. YOU CAN’T USE ME AGAINST ME.
