“I am blessed and excited to continue with the Bucks,” Horst said. “Thank you to Marc, Wes and Jamie for your continued confidence and trust in me and for giving us the resources to be successful. We have the best ownership in sports, and I’m humbled to work with you. I also want to express my deep appreciation to my great partners and friends, Peter Feigin and Coach Bud, as we continue building sustainable success in Milwaukee. My executive team, led by Milt Newton, is incredible, and I appreciate your support and dedication every day. “To our players, I’m grateful for your trust, commitment, and belief, and for working incredibly hard to get better every day. You are the reason I get to live my dream, and my family and I are forever grateful. Milwaukee is our home. Go Bucks!”

Horst’s success as a general manager has been defined by his aggressiveness and his lack of ego. Horst gave up a massive package of draft picks and pick swaps to obtain Jrue Holiday last offseason. Many considered it an overpay, but Horst believed Holiday was the missing piece. He ended up being right. That wasn’t the case for all of his moves last offseason though. He also believed D.J. Augustin was the team’s answer at backup point guard. He was wrong. It didn’t work, but Horst quickly pivoted out of that signing and turned Augustin, a first-round pick and D.J. Wilson, Horst’s first draft pick as GM, into P.J. Tucker. Tucker ultimately became one of the pieces that pushed the Bucks over the top and turned them into NBA champions.
Bucks GM Jon Horst agrees to extension
After architecting the franchise’s first NBA championship in 50 years, Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst has agreed to a long-term contract extension, he told ESPN on Friday. Horst had one year left on his contract, and his new deal — finalized Friday morning with his agent, Brian Elfus, and team officials — takes Horst through the next several years, sources told ESPN.
A formal announcement will come later Friday. Horst’s deal punctuates the signing of several key organizational members in the past year, including NBA and Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, guard Jrue Holiday and coach Mike Budenholzer. Horst is starting his fifth season as general manager, a run flush with two No. 1 seeds in the Eastern Conference and the 2020-21 title.
Milwaukee ownership approached Horst near the end of the Bucks season about beginning talks on a new deal and conversations that culminated with an agreement in recent days, league sources said. Horst has evolved into a popular figure and strong leader in a Bucks organization that had struggled through fractures in recent years.
Bucks, Jon Horst agree to a contract extension
Adrian Wojnarowski: Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst – an NBA executive of the year candidate – has signed a three-year contract extension, league sources tell ESPN.
“Jon’s strong leadership and savvy decision-making ability have been instrumental as we continue to build the Bucks into a championship-caliber organization,” said Bucks owners Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jamie Dinan. “He has brought smart processes to our basketball operations and together with Head Coach Mike Budenholzer and President Peter Feigin, Jon has done an incredible job connecting the basketball and business sides of our organization. We are excited about the future of our team and confident in Jon leading us to the highest level.”
Jon Horst: “I want to give a BIG thank you to our terrific players for their outstanding efforts. Giannis, Khris, Brook, Malcolm and Eric all had incredible seasons and our ‘Bench Mob’ was fantastic all season long. All of our players brought so much excitement to the court and I thank each of them for contributing to our success and embracing our great city and fans.”

Utah doesn't want Julius Randle?
Tommy Beer: Stephen A Smith on SiriumXM w/ @Rick Kamla this afternoon when asked about potential Mitchell deal: “Utah didn’t want Julius Randle, from what I’m told. They don’t want him. The Knicks were willing to unload him. They want RJ Barrett. They want at least 6 1st-round picks.” pic.twitter.com/9Nn7DuwlZe

I knew if we could win Game 3 and go to 3-0, it was pretty much a wrap on the series. It was just a matter of whether [the series would be won] in Game 4 or a “gentleman’s sweep” in Game 5. Down the stretch in the fourth quarter, we got a stop, and I was just talking to myself: “Put ‘em to sleep. Put ‘em to sleep.” That was the conversation I was having with myself. Not with anyone else on the team or anyone else in the arena. Then, I had finished that layup underneath Jokic, and that was the thought that came out – just to do the sign. I didn’t say, “Night Night” at the time. I was just telling myself, “Put ‘em to sleep.” Fast forward to Game 5, when I made the last layup to go up five with 19 seconds left. That was the official, “Put them to sleep.” The camera didn’t get me on that one, but I actually said it. Fast forward to Memphis, Dallas and then Boston, and it kind of took on a life of its own.
NDP: How did it feel to break it out again in Boston and seal the Finals win? SC: It felt the best. The way that game went, it was an emotional rollercoaster. They came out just hitting every shot, and they were up double digits in the first four minutes. We slowly just crept back and then went on that 21-nothing run. When we came out in the third quarter, everyone was feeling it. Let’s just step on their throats, right now.
NDP: What’s it been like seeing athletes from sports all around the world doing the celebration? SC: It’s the best, ’cause some are taking it to new extremes that I would never feel comfortable doing in the league. But it’s dope to know how far the reach is. I’ve told people before, “I know there’s people that did the symbol before me.” But to know that you cemented a moment that’s on the biggest of stages, and people are inspired by it and want to have fun with whatever they’re doing with it — they’ve taken their own spin on it and have had some creativity with it.
