The Trail Blazers have acquired guards Eric Bledsoe and Keon Johnson and forward Justise Winslow from the LA Clippers in exchange for Norman Powell and Robert Covington, the team announced today. Portland also received Detroit’s 2025 second-round pick from the Clippers in the trade.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Clippers are sending Blazers a 2025 second-round pick via the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN.
Law Murray: This trade is not necessarily a move that suggests that Jason Preston would be ready to contribute anytime soon, league source says. Team has open roster spots and will continue to look to tinker with the roster. Team has a surplus of wings right now.
Bobby Marks: Here are the contracts: For LAC: 🏀N. Powell: $15.5M, $16.8M, $18M, $19.2M, $20.5M 🏀R. Covington: $13M (UFA w/bird rights) For POR: 🏀E. Bledsoe: $18.1M, $19.4M ($3.9M guaranteed) 🏀J. Winslow: $3.9M, $4.1M 🏀K. Johnson: $2.6M, $2.7M, $2.8M, $4.5M
SLAM Magazine: Dillon Brooks is eager to have Justice Winslow in Memphis. “Now we have a player that we’re getting that actually wants to play with us and thinks we’re good.” (via @Tim MacMahon) pic.twitter.com/vv1DOnksiL
Peter Edmiston: Based on his social media activity, seems like @Justise Winslow is extremely excited to join the Grizzlies. That’s the value of having a young core like the Grizzlies have, it’s fun to be part of. He’s looking forward to moving from Miami to Memphis! Wouldn’t have happened before Ja.
Dwyane Wade: 👀 Great pickup @MiamiHEAT
Justise Winslow: … 🤫🤫🤫
Aldridge, who has been on a recent roll from three-point range (20 for his last 40), would appear to be the far more logical target because the Heat could use another skilled, accomplished power rotation player. An informed source said the Spurs would want more than simply an injured Winslow and Derrick Jones Jr. and expiring contracts. Kendrick Nunn could entice the Spurs, but whether Miami would be willing is another story.
At another point in the discussions this week, the Thunder asked the Heat to include two among Herro, Bam Adebayo and Justise Winslow, according to a source in touch with one of the two teams. The Heat also is opposed to including Adebayo, whom Erik Spoelstra ranked among the best centers in the league in the final months of last season.
The rookie extension for Justise Winslow now comes with the poison pill provision. Although Winslow can still be traded, the restriction makes it extremely difficult during the 2018-19 season. For trade purposes, the Winslow salary would count as $10.6M towards incoming salary for teams interested in acquiring the forward.
And though Pat Riley publicly said there are no untouchables on his roster, the Heat also showed no inclination in trading Goran Dragic, Kelly Olynyk and Bam Adebayo. And Miami’s preference this summer was to keep James Johnson and Justise Winslow.
Ira Winderman: Riley says Winslow was not offered in trades in draft talks.
Jeremy Woo: One team to keep an eye on as the draft nears: the Miami Heat, who have been pursuing the possibility of acquiring a first-round selection, according to multiple league sources. At the moment, the Heat don’t own a draft pick. Jake Fisher: I’ve been told Justise Winslow is available in Miami’s trade discussions.
Brian Lewis: Hearing the #Nets will not be trading DeMarre Carroll to the #Heat for Justice Winslow and Tyler Johnson (whom they’d given a 4-year, $50M offer sheet in the summer of 2016). That doesn’t mean the #Nets won’t listen to other offers for Carroll before Thursday’s 3pm trade deadline. I’m told there is interest around the #NBA.
Rival executives believe former 10th overall pick Justise Winslow can be obtained on the trade market.
Ira Winderman: Heat denies ESPN report of offering Dragic and Winslow to Cavaliers for Irving. Say no offer of any type has been made
The Miami Heat are willing to part with Goran Dragic and Justise Winslow as centerpieces for an Irving trade, league sources said. With the Cleveland-Miami history, there’s little chance for a deal unless the Heat offered an overwhelming package. Gilbert may have unwittingly thrust pressure onto Altman in a Wednesday news conference, declaring “Indiana could’ve done better” in its trade package for Paul George. The Cavaliers have more leverage in a deal because Irving has two years on his contract to George’s one.
Ira Winderman: Source tells Sun Sentinel: Heat apparently might not be able to move McRoberts to clear Wade space unless a pick or Winslow(!) included.
There’s no shot at Boston getting its hands on Winslow anytime in the near future. But the fact that their interest even now remains strong, could potentially come into play down the road. Winslow says facing the Celtics today is a big game because of its potential impact on the Eastern Conference standings. “This game pretty much counts as double,” Winslow told CSNNE.com. “It’s going to be close down the stretch with these teams. This game definitely counts a little bit more.”
And as far as Boston’s interest in him on draft night, while flattered, Winslow said it doesn’t add any additional signficance whenever he sees the Celtics. “It doesn’t mean anything until possibly being a free agent or anything,” Winslow said. “It’s just business, just like it is with the other 28 NBA teams.” Winslow was selected by the Heat with the 10th overall pick in last June’s NBA draft. The Celtics were offering multiple draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets who were on the clock at No. 9.
According to several sources, the club is holding out for a hero to shake loose from another roster, while also looking for the next partially hidden gem (think Jae Crowder, Isaiah Thomas). It’s already been reported here that the Celts rang the Clippers’ doorbell to see if Blake Griffin could come out and play for them, and sources say the C’s were one of a number of teams that sought to do business with the Heat in the wake of more blood clot issues for Chris Bosh. But, no, Miami isn’t giving up Justise Winslow.
Heat president Pat Riley and the organization are no strangers to getting the most out of talented but troubled players. Hassan Whiteside, the latest reclamation project for Miami, and rookie Justise Winslow would be the centerpieces of any trade proposal, along additional players who would be added to make the salaries match.
