Mike Trudell: Kuzma on LeBron and AD extensions: “Yeah, I got a great situation having a 2+1 player option and being able to align myself with those guys and also continue to learn and develop … to be in a championship window until my deal is up when I’m into my prime. It’s a win win.”

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed forward Kyle Kuzma to a multi-year contract extension, it was announced by Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka.
“It is especially gratifying for our Lakers franchise to draft, develop and now sign one of our own to a contract extension,” said Pelinka. “Kyle has shown tremendous growth over the last three years, and played a crucial role on last season’s championship team. Kyle has been a terrific member of the Lakers community and we are all very excited about his continued future with us.”
Bobby Marks: Like all rookie extensions, Kyle Kuzma will have a poison pill restriction. For trade purposes, the current contract of $3.6M will count as outgoing salary. For incoming salary of the acquiring team, the average of the last year of his contract and extension is used- $10.9M.
Kyle Goon: Anthony Davis said he thinks Kyle Kuzma will now be able to play without the pressure of worrying about a contract. “He’s a champion. He deserves it.” One of the things he’s been impressed with is Kuzma’s willingness to take on tough matchups on defense.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma has agreed to a three-year, $40M contract extension, including a player option on 2023-2024 season, sources tell ESPN.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Player option on a non-max rookie extension is a first in league, a creative wrinkle that allows Kuzma into unrestricted free agency in his prime at 28. Smart move and great benefit for Kuzma should he out-perform this deal headed into summer of 2023.
LeBron James: KUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! Congrats bro!!! Next dinner on you for sure! Vino chronicles @kylekuzma
The status of those discussions? Tabled for now. Kuzma met with Vogel and General Manager Rob Pelinka at the beginning of the month to feel out his role for the season, a person with knowledge of the situation told SCNG, and to get a sense for his future with the organization. Kuzma came away from the meeting with a sense that he would have to scrap for on-court opportunities.
After helping the Lakers win the 2020 title over the Miami Heat in six games, Kuzma is looking to get paid handsomely by the Lakers. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Kuzma is expecting a “sizable deal” from the Purple and Gold. “Then you got Kyle Kuzma, who is extension eligible, still has a year left on his contract but is extension eligible,” Windhorst said on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast, via Heavy. “And from what I understand, he is expecting a sizable deal, hoping for a sizable deal.”
After averaging 18.7 points a season ago, Kyle Kuzma adapted to a new role on these championship Lakers. He served as a scorer off the bench and flashed signs of his continued upside. Kuzma will be eligible for his rookie extension this offseason, and could discuss a new deal with the Lakers. The 25-year-old also could bypass an extension and use next season to continue elevating his value prior to restricted free agency. And then there is the option of a trade suitor with several interested clubs.
