Terrence Ross sticks with Magic
If the Lakers decide to break up the money, they’re interested in several combinations of players, including Toronto’s Danny Green, Orlando Magic guard Terrence Ross, Portland Trail Blazers guard Seth Curry and several other free agents with strong shooting ability.
Orlando has been steadfast in its desire to bring back top–tier free agents Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross. Some within the Magic organization are anxious to see what the market is for both. Ross, who has emerged as an elite sixth man, could be a candidate to get overpaid by a team desperate to add a scoring wing.
Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross are two of the most experienced players on the roster, and they’re two of the biggest reasons why the team has played as well as it has. Will the team attempt to keep them both when they become unrestricted free agents this summer? Jeff Weltman: There’s a lot of season left to be played, and this isn’t really the appropriate time for us to be having that discussion. Obviously, they’ve had very good seasons. They’re good players. They’re good people. I think they like it here. They’re an important part of our team.
Jeff Weltman on Vucevic and Ross’ free agencies, continued: They have decisions to make. We have decisions to make. That stuff comes around in July, and we’ll plan and strategize for that at the appropriate time. Right now, we’re more focused on making the playoffs and finishing the season strongly. But, obviously, those guys have been very good for us, and I think that they’re having very good seasons. They both enjoy, I think, the team and our coach and Orlando. But there’s a lot of real estate between all of those points and coming to an agreement. So we’ll see how all that evolves, but that’s really more for a postseason discussion.
One of the teams most eager to move its first-rounder along for immediate help is the Pelicans, who have won two straight games as they’ve gotten Elfrid Payton and Nikola Mirotic back from injury but are still desperate for small forward help. A source told SN that the Pels made a pitch for small forward Kelly Oubre before Washington traded him to Phoenix, and New Orleans has continued to look for a starting-quality wing. The Pelicans have shown interest in Orlando small forward Terrence Ross, who has had a career year, but is a free agent this summer and uncertain to re-sign with the Magic.
The Magic’s preference has been to trade Jonathon Simmons, who has struggled this season. Simmons is signed for next season, at $5.7 million, but only $1 million is guaranteed. Still, teams pushing for the postseason (like New Orleans) prefer Ross for a first-rounder. The Magic may have to budge on that if they want a pick.
