Kostas Antetokounmpo to France

LDLC ASVEL announced that the club has agreed to a two-year deal with the 2020 NBA champion (with the LA Lakers) Kostas Antetokounmpo. Per EuroLeague: LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne added size and athleticism to its frontcourt by signing Kostas Antetokounmpo to a two-year deal, the club announced on Friday. Antetokounmpo (2.08 meters, 23 years old) arrives from LA Lakers of the NBA, where he played limited minutes in 15 appearances this past season.
In a recent interview with L’Equipe, ASVEL President Tony Parker calls the government for aid “to save” French basketball during these trying times. “If it lasts longer, we’re going to die. The clubs are going to die. We can’t play behind closed doors for a whole season, it’s impossible. We need the government to help us. It would be good if they dropped the charges. employers, at least for the duration of the confinement. I’m afraid for basketball”, said Parker.
ASVEL Villeurbanne president Tony Parker said that promoting T.J. Parker, his brother, to the head coach position was an “obvious” decision towards his goal to keep the club’s French identity and preserve a certain level of continuity. “This new coaching staff is an obvious choice for us,” Parker said in a press conference held in Astroballe arena, Tuesday (23/6), per ASVEL. “Our wish was to remain a 100% French club and work in continuity. T.J. [Parker] has been at the club for eight years and now it’s a good time to give him a chance. Now we have to bring trophies. Our coaching staff is very comprehensive and of a very good standard for France. Frederic Fauthoux can bring a lot to T.J. with his experience and that can make a difference.”
Parker also talked about ASVEL Villeurbanne, of which he’s president, returning to EuroLeague next season. “We are going to finally play against the best teams in Europe. When you invest in a team that the goal is to play in the best league. I’m so excited for the fans for our city and for our country to play against the best teams. Like Barcelona and Real Madrid.”
ASVEL Villeurbanne was officially confirmed to participate in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 editions of EuroLeague and, upon the announcement of the news, club president, four-time NBA champion Tony Parker, voiced the big ambitions he has for the French team. “My absolute dream is for the team to reach a 15 m. budget,” Parker said in an interview with L’ Equipe. “If you are able to do this, you can really be competitive and try to go to the Final Four like Zalgiris did last year.”
While ASVEL will have to wait until 2019 – 2020 to play in EuroLeague, given that certain commitments are fulfilled, club president Tony Parker thinks that this wait will benefit the organization in order to be better prepared for the top-tier European competition. “We will soon represent France in Euroleague,” Parker said to French RMC Sport during the halftime of ASVEL’s French League loss to Limoges, Sunday. “I want the team to be ready in 2019-2020. I’m happy because it’s a bad thing for a good thing. We still need a year to make progress.”
