Charles Bassey Rumors
Neither is the case, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. In fact, Bassey has been working out at the Sixers’ training facility in Camden for the past few weeks in preparation for the upcoming season, and has impressed the coaching staff and front office personnel who have seen him play. The dispute is purely contractual.
The demands were aggressive, but not completely unprecedented. The Sixers gave Isaiah Joe, the 49th pick in the 2020 draft, a three-year, $4.2 million contract, of which the first two years and $2.42 million were guaranteed. The Clippers gave Brandon Boston Jr, the 51st pick in this year’s draft, a similar deal of three years and $4.3 million, with the first two seasons and $2.49 million guaranteed. Bassey’s request was also strengthened by the fact that he had a contract offer with a multi-year guarantee, similar to the one Boston Jr. signed, on the table from a team if he were to go undrafted, multiple sources told The Athletic. Teams that were considering drafting him, including the Sixers, were aware of that at the time of the draft.
The Sixers, by contrast, have only been willing to guarantee the first year of a proposed three-year deal, per multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations, something which they feel is commensurate with his draft slot.
Sixers rookie Charles Bassey — the No. 53 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Western Kentucky — plans to sign the one-year, non-guaranteed tender, sources said. Bassey and the 76ers have so far been unable to land a rookie deal. Bassey did not play in the Las Vegas Summer League because he was unsigned.
Charles Bassey, the 53rd pick in this year’s draft, remains unsigned, though a team source told NBC Sports Philadelphia on Wednesday that Bassey will be on the Sixers’ roster this season on an NBA contract. Bassey and the team are working through contract details as it hasn’t yet been determined whether he’ll be on a one-year deal or multi-year deal, per the source.
