Randy Ayers Rumors

New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams will promote assistant coach Randy Ayers to lead assistant, filling the position left by Mike Malone. Ayers served as an assistant on Williams’s staff this past season. Ayers has also served as the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2003-04 season. “It’s an easy move for us because he’s been a head coach and a lead assistant,” Williams said Monday at his youth camp. “But losing Mike is a tough blow for us because he meant so much to our program.”
New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams said Wednesday he needs solid assistants on his staff to help him get through his first season as an NBA head coach. So Williams will lean on a veteran who is one of his former coaches, and one with a specialty of developing young players. The Hornets announced the addition of Randy Ayers and Fred Vinson to Williams’ staff. Ayers has been an assistant and head coach in the NBA for 11 seasons and also was head coach at Ohio State. Vinson had been an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers since 2007. “I can’t say enough about Randy and what he’s going to bring to our staff,” Williams said. “He’s been around longer than all of us. … I need a guy that can help me navigate through some of these waters that I’ve never been through before as a head coach.”
