As part of his work with the FA’s specialist coaching team, Danks had gone on a study trip to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA, as Matt Crocker explained. “Somehow, Aaron unbelievably blagged his way into spending a full day with the Golden State Warriors coaches. This then resulted in him being in the locker room before a big NBA play-off game and pitch-side an hour before the game started, with Steph Curry and his individual development coach, where they were working on his three-point shooting.”
Minnesota Vikings owners Mark, Zygi and Lenny Wilf officially became owners of Orlando City Soccer Club on Wednesday after completing a sale — which includes the Lions, the Pride, Exploria Stadium and an academy system — from Flávio Augusto da Silva. Mark Wilf will assume the role of chairman and governor of the club. The purchase price was not disclosed, but reports from The Athletic place the transaction at $400 million to $450 million. The new ownership group includes a familiar name. The DeVos family, owners of the Orlando Magic, have purchased a minority stake in the soccer club from the Wilfs.
As minority investors, the DeVos family will mainly fulfill an advisory role, providing insight and helping the Wilfs integrate into the Orlando community. They will not hold a voting position on the board and will not serve in a daily operational role. Both families hope the partnership will allow Orlando City and the Magic to collaborate in the future.
Back in the States, where soccer is still not exactly what anyone would call a matter of life and death, the TV audience was anything but insignificant. Not only did the Italy-England match deliver more viewers than each game of NBC Sports’ coverage of the Stanley Cup Final, but it also handily out-delivered nearly every game of the 2020-21 NBA season. Per Nielsen, only the Christmas Day Mavs-Lakers broadcast, two playoff outings and the three NBA Finals games have put up bigger numbers than Sunday’s overseas soccer showdown. For the sake of context, the two conference semifinals telecasts (Bucks-Nets, Hawks-Sixers) were both Game 7s.
