France came back from a 16-point deficit to beat New Zealand 95 – 81 in its first preparation game in China, ahead of the World Cup. Nando De Colo scored 19 points while Frank Ntilikina and Rudy Gobert added 12 points apiece for the French side. Corey Webster contributed 11 points, Tohi Smith-Milner 11 and Tom Abercrombie 10 to New Zealand.
New Zealand has named the 12-man roster that will compete in the 2019 World Cup tournament. The squad features such players as Tom Abercrombie, Jarrod Kenny, Alex Pledger, Rob Loe, Isaac Fotu, Tai Webster and Corey Webster.
While Steven Adams has already found a home in the NBA, Tom Abercrombie is still battling hundreds of others for one of the last few roster positions. The Tall Blacks swingman has had work-outs with San Antonio, Milwaukee, Houston and Dallas, but has found it difficult to stand out. Abercrombie says playing for the Phoenix Suns in the upcoming summer league will give him a better chance to impress. “It’s an opportunity to be with a team for an extended period and play a lot of games with a bit more structure and you have a better idea of where you can get your shots and that sort of thing.”
New Zealand Breakers and Tall Blacks basketball star Tom Abercrombie is off to the United States for a “now-or-never” crack at an NBA contract. Abercombie flies out of Auckland tomorrow for mini-camp opportunities with NBA franchises the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs currently lead the NBA finals 1-0 and feature former Tall Blacks captain Sean Marks as a key executive.
Coach Dean Vickerman says they’ve had Tom Abercrombie working hard over the last month for a shot at the NBA. “He’s preparing that he’s going. We’ve put an NBA line down on the floor. We’ve got NBA balls and he’s training as if he’s going over to play in their Summer League but it may happen this year it may not happen this year.” Abercrombie, like others, has a clause in his contract allowing him to explore options in the NBA.
