The 49th-annual Arizona Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort on Friday night, with six new inductees being enshrined. The inductees are: former NBA great Tom Chambers, Olympic swimming gold medalist Amy Van Dyken-Rouen, Olympian and world boxing champion Michael Carbajal, Arizona Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall, University of Arizona football coaching legend, the late Dick Tomey and longtime Northern Arizona University athletic trainer Michael Nesbitt.
Tom Chambers, a former four-time NBA All-Star turned commentator, has been charged with assault for an April incident at a restaurant in Scottsdale, Ariz., according to police. Scottsdale police spokesman Sgt. Ben Hoster said Chambers, 59, was dining at Isabella’s Kitchen on April 15 when another patron began insulting him.
If someone told you, “Your mom should have killed you when you came out of the womb” — would you consider those “fighting words?” Ex-NBA star Tom Chambers certainly did — admitting he got physical with a trash-talking 22-year-old at an Arizona bar … and now he’s been charged with assault. It all stems from an April 15 incident at Isabella’s Kitchen in Scottsdale — where Tom says he was innocently hanging out when another patron started insulting him.
Tom admits he “absolutely put hands on [Alexander]” but never punched him. Tom says he was trying to get Alexander to “show respect.” Alexander told police a different story — saying Chambers came at him from across the bar, grabbed him by the throat and threw him backwards. Cops say Alexander had a mark on his neck and a bruise on his lip.
