Wes Unseld Jr Rumors
Michael Singer: Michael Malone, on @AltitudeSR: “I hope I don’t have the same staff next year. Wes Unseld Jr. should be a head coach.” “He shouldn’t be back. He’s more than ready to be a head coach.” Also cites David Adelman and Jordi Fernandez as future head coaches on his staff.
The Rockets do have interest in Rivers, a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking said. They were expecting and likely still plan to begin requesting permission to speak with candidates or scheduling meetings by Wednesday or Thursday. Those candidates are expected to include Tyronn Lue, Jeff Van Gundy, Kenny Atkinson, Wes Unseld Jr., Stephen Silas and possibly Sam Cassell.
Michael Singer: First thing out of Michael Malone’s mouth upon seeing me in the bubble: “Nice of the Denver Post to show up for the Conference Finals.” Yes, it was in jest. Was cool to be around team again for 1st time in months. Had good chats w/ Gary Harris, Wes Unseld Jr., other staffers.
Scotto: “When I look at the Bulls, Kenny Atkinson always seemed like an ideal fit there given what he did in Brooklyn building up the culture and really developing guys, which Chicago is built around. They have a ton of young guys in Wendell Carter, Lauri Markkanen, Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and Coby White. You’ve heard talk of assistants like Ime Udoka and Wes Unseld Jr., who worked with Arturas Karnisovas. I think he’s a sleeper. Somewhere in there, I can see Billy Donovan having interest as well because I think they’re on the rise.”
The Bulls are narrowing to finalists for their head coaching job and expect to conduct final interviews soon, sources said. Denver assistant Wes Unseld Jr., Philadelphia assistant Ime Udoka, Milwaukee assistant Darvin Ham and former Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson are among the coaches who have had strong interviews so far.
Before anyone buys too much stock in what White was saying/guessing, however, there are other indications that the Bulls have at least moved into a second round of interviews in the coaching search process. Besides several sources indicating that the first round wrapped up last week, several sportsbooks have taken down the odds on the next Bulls head coach because of all the one-sided action that was being placed on Denver assistant coach Wes Unseld Jr.
